Champagne Diamonds: The Canadian Guide

A champagne diamond is a diamond with a warm brown to golden body colour. It is a real diamond in every way: the same carbon crystal, the same 10 out of 10 hardness, the same sparkle. It just carries colour, and no two stones carry it quite the same way.

Every champagne diamond we sell is lab grown. That is a deliberate choice. A lab grown diamond is chemically and physically the same stone as a mined one, and growing it means we know exactly where it came from. It also means we can offer warm colour at sizes that would be out of reach for most people otherwise. Most of our champagne stones sit between 2.5 and 4 carats.

Are champagne diamonds real diamonds?

Yes. A lab grown champagne diamond is a real diamond. It has the same carbon crystal structure as a mined diamond, measures 10 on the Mohs hardness scale, passes a diamond tester, and is cut, graded and set exactly like any other diamond. The difference is how it was made, not what it is. The colour is part of the stone, not a coating or a finish.

Where does the colour come from?

Colour in a diamond comes from its crystal structure and the trace elements caught in it as it forms. In brown and champagne diamonds, the warmth comes from how the lattice sits together, with nitrogen adding a golden or yellowish note on top. The result ranges from a pale straw tint through to a deep cognac. Every stone reads a little differently, which is why we photograph each one rather than relying on a grade alone.

Reading the colour: the C1 to C7 shorthand

You will see champagne diamonds described on a C1 to C7 scale. That is trade shorthand for how deep the brown runs, and it is useful for setting expectations. Grading labs do not issue C grades. Lighter stones get a letter grade on the standard scale with a brown notation, and richer stones are graded on the fancy colour scale, for example Fancy Light Brown or Fancy Pink Brown.

On every product page we list the actual colour grade, clarity and millimetre measurements, so you can compare like for like. With champagne diamonds, colour is what drives the look and clarity is more forgiving, because the warm body colour hides small inclusions that would show up in a white stone.

What our champagne diamonds cost

Real numbers from our own collection, in Canadian dollars, as of July 2026. Our loose champagne diamonds run from $3,400 to $4,250 CAD for stones between 2.50 and 4.10 carats, all VS clarity or better. That works out to roughly $950 to $1,400 per carat.

Why we sell lab grown

Three reasons, plainly. You know where the stone came from, with no guesswork about its history. You get more carat for your budget, which matters a lot at 3 and 4 carats. And the stone itself is identical to a mined diamond, so you are not trading away hardness, sparkle or durability to get there. Stones of 1 carat and up that we set into our rings come with IGI certification.

We are straightforward about this because you should be able to compare properly. If a seller will not tell you plainly whether a stone is lab grown or mined, and what its certificate says, ask again before you buy.

Champagne, cognac, brown and chocolate

These all describe the same colour family. Champagne covers the lighter golden brown range. Cognac describes the darker, more orange end. Brown is the plain gemological term for the whole family. Chocolate Diamonds is a trademark belonging to the jeweller Le Vian, not a separate kind of stone. The names are trade shorthand, so judge the actual colour grade and, more importantly, photos or video of the exact stone.

Do champagne diamonds sparkle?

Yes. Champagne diamonds have the same refractive index and fire as white diamonds, and cut quality drives sparkle in any stone. The body colour makes the flashes read warmer and softer than the icy fire of a white diamond. In person that warmth is the whole appeal. The stone glows rather than glitters. Cuts that hold colour beautifully include cushion, oval, moval, pear and old mine cuts, which is exactly what we look for.

Best settings and metals for champagne diamonds

Yellow gold deepens the warmth and makes the stone read richer. Rose gold pushes it toward peachy, romantic tones. White gold or platinum creates contrast, so the champagne colour reads as the deliberate centrepiece. Bezels, tulip baskets and vintage inspired designs suit these stones especially well.
