A champagne diamond is a natural diamond with a warm brown to golden body colour. It's a real diamond in every way: the same carbon, the same 10 out of 10 hardness, the same sparkle. It just formed with colour in it, and no two stones carry that colour the same way. Are champagne diamonds real diamonds?

Yes. Champagne diamonds are natural diamonds from the brown colour family. They're chemically identical to white diamonds, measure the same 10 on the Mohs hardness scale, pass a diamond tester, and are cut, certified and set exactly like any other diamond. The only difference is the colour, which formed naturally in the earth.

Where does the colour come from?

Most consumer guides say "nitrogen," but that's only part of the story. According to research published by GIA, the brown colour in most natural diamonds comes mainly from vacancy clusters, tiny gaps in the crystal lattice created when the diamond was plastically deformed under extreme heat and pressure deep in the earth. Nitrogen can add a yellowish modifier on top of that. The result ranges from a pale straw tint to a deep cognac brown, and every stone wears it differently.

How are champagne diamonds graded? The C1 to C7 scale

Champagne diamonds are graded on two systems. The jewellery trade uses the C1 to C7 champagne scale, created by Australia's Argyle mine. Labs like GIA and IGI don't use C grades: lighter champagne stones get a letter grade on the standard D to Z scale with a brown notation, and richer stones are graded on the fancy colour scale, for example Fancy Light Brown or Fancy Brown.

With champagne diamonds, colour is the main value driver and clarity is more forgiving, because the warm body colour hides small inclusions that would show in a white diamond.

How much do champagne diamonds cost?

Champagne diamonds typically cost 30 to 60 percent less than white diamonds of comparable size and quality, because brown was historically the most common colour mined. The gap widens as carat weight goes up, which is why champagne is the practical route to a genuinely big natural stone.

Real numbers from our own collection, in Canadian dollars, as of July 2026: our loose champagne diamonds run from $3,400 to $4,250 CAD for stones between 2.50 and 4.16 carats, all VS clarity or better. That works out to roughly $950 to $1,400 per carat. A comparable white diamond would cost several times that per carat at these sizes.

Why champagne diamonds are getting rarer

Most of the world's champagne diamonds came from the Argyle mine in Western Australia, which Rio Tinto closed in November 2020 after 37 years of production. Roughly three quarters of Argyle's output was brown diamonds, and no single source has replaced it. Industry reporting since the closure has tracked steadily rising prices for fine natural brown stones. Existing stones still circulate through cutters and dealers, but the supply is finite, and the best material is getting harder to find each year. That scarcity is part of why champagne diamonds keep appearing in 2026 engagement ring trend roundups.

Champagne vs cognac vs brown vs chocolate

These are all the same gem: a natural brown diamond. Champagne describes the lighter golden brown range, roughly C1 to C4. Cognac describes the darker, orange leaning end, roughly C5 to C7. Brown is the plain gemological term for the whole family. Chocolate Diamonds is a trademark of the jeweller Le Vian, not a separate type of stone. The names are trade shorthand, so always judge the actual colour grade and, more importantly, photos or video of the exact stone.

Do champagne diamonds sparkle?

Yes. Champagne diamonds have the same refractive index and fire as white diamonds, and cut quality drives sparkle in any diamond. The body colour makes the flashes read warmer and softer than the icy fire of a white stone. In person, that warmth is the whole appeal: the stone glows rather than glitters. Cuts that hold colour beautifully include cushion, oval, pear and old mine cuts, which is exactly what we look for when we buy.

Natural, treated or lab grown: what to watch for

Three things sell under the champagne label. Natural colour stones formed brown in the earth. Treated stones are diamonds whose colour was changed by irradiation or high pressure treatment after mining, and they're worth much less. Lab grown champagne diamonds also exist at a fraction of the natural price, and they don't hold value. Before you buy from anyone, ask whether the colour is natural and what the certificate says. Best settings and metals for champagne diamonds

Yellow gold deepens the warmth and makes the stone read richer. Rose gold pushes it toward peachy, romantic tones. White gold or platinum creates contrast, so the champagne colour reads as the deliberate centrepiece. Bezels, tulip baskets and vintage inspired designs suit these stones especially well. The largest faceted diamond in the world is brown: the Golden Jubilee, a 545.67 carat yellow brown diamond cut from rough found at South Africa's Premier mine, now part of the Thai royal collection.
