Carat vs Ratio: Why Two 3 Carat Diamonds Look Different

Short answer: Carat is weight, not how big a diamond looks. Ratio (length divided by width) and the face-up measurements decide how big and how long a stone reads when worn. 3 carats is the average stone we build, 2 is the lower end and 4 is the larger end. A 1.3 oval and a 1.5 oval of the same carat look completely different.
Do not just know the carat weight. Know the measurements.
What carat do most people choose?
3 carats is the average we build. 2 is the lower end, 4 is the larger end. If you just want a safe bet, go 3.
What is ratio?
Length divided by width. A ratio of 1.0 is round or square. Ovals usually run 1.3 to 1.5. Movals start around 1.7 and run to 2.0. The higher the ratio, the longer and slimmer the stone.
How does ratio change the look?

What should I ask for instead of just carat?
Tell us the look, and we find the best length, width and depth for it. A well cut stone with good spread can look bigger than a heavier stone that carries its weight in the belly.
