What Is the Bridge of an Engagement Ring?

In this guide

By Clint Casmiro, Co-Founder, Smiro Studio, Toronto · Updated September 28, 2026

Short answer: The bridge is the part of the ring that sits under the head, between the diamond and the band, on the side profile. You cannot see it from the top and it does not affect how a band stacks. That makes it the best place for something personal: diamonds, engraving, a birthstone, or on this ring, a heart that flows into the tulip basket.

Here is a crushed ice cushion with a detail most people will never notice, and why we love that.

Another custom ring you will never find at your local big box store is this 2.7 square-ish crushed ice cushion diamond with six claw prongs holding the ring together and then when you flip it over, beautiful tulip basket holding up the stone with a split shank that flows into the tulip basket and shows this little half petal in the middle. On the bridge of this ring we have this heart that flows into a tulip basket and on the side profile, peonies hand engraved all over the band.

    The ring in the video

A 2.7 carat squarish crushed ice cushion with six claw prongs. Flip it and there is a tulip basket holding the stone, a split shank that flows into it with a small half petal in the middle, a heart on the bridge that flows into the basket, and peonies hand engraved over the band.

    Where exactly is the bridge?

Look at a ring from the side. Under the stone, where the two sides of the band meet the head, there is a small section of metal. That is the bridge.

What can go on a bridge

    • A row of small diamonds, called a diamond bridge.
    • Hand engraving, like flowers or a constellation.
    • A heart, initials or a small symbol.
    • Birthstones.
We once engraved the Big Dipper on a bridge, with both partners' birthstones in a shooting star pattern. More stories on our hand engraving page.

Does the bridge affect a wedding band?

It can. A raised or indented bridge helps a band sit flush. See flush bands.

    Questions we get about this

Can you see the bridge when wearing the ring?

Only from the side. It is hidden from the top.

    What is a diamond bridge?

A row of small diamonds set along the bridge under the stone.

    Can I engrave the bridge?

Yes. It is our favourite spot for engraving.

How much does a ring with a custom bridge cost?

A fully custom ring from us starts at about $4,000 USD, and most of the rings we build land between $4,000 and $5,000. Our Ready To Order settings start at $1,299 CAD, plus the diamond. The centre stone moves the price most: in September 2026 a 2 carat lab grown diamond ran about $2,500 CAD and a 3 carat about $2,700 CAD. Real numbers are in our cost guide.

What is the difference between the bridge and the gallery?

The gallery is the openwork around the head under the stone. The bridge is the section on the side profile that joins the two sides of the band beneath the head.
