Will a Wedding Band Sit Flush with a Tulip Basket?
By Clint Casmiro, Co-Founder, Smiro Studio, Toronto · Updated September 28, 2026
Short answer: Yes, a straight wedding band can sit flush against a tulip basket ring, but it has to be designed in. The basket needs to sit high enough that the band slides underneath, or the bridge is indented to make room. On this 4 carat moval we kept the split shank subtle and set the head high enough for a band to stack flush and flow into the petal.
This is the question we get most after people fall for a tulip basket. Here is a ring built for it.

A custom ring you will never find at your local big box store, featuring this massive hidden halo and tulip basket. To start, it's this 4 carat elongated moval diamond with a 1.8 ratio set with these four tulip petals and massive hidden halo that spans the entire length of the stone. Plus in the side profile we added the most subtle split shank that flows ever so slightly into those tulip baskets. So subtle that from this top view you don't see the split shank at all, which is the best way to design it. It's still set high enough that a wedding band can stack flush underneath and flow directly into the tulip petal. That is a custom ring you'll never find at your local big box store.
The ring in the video
A 4 carat elongated moval with a 1.8 ratio, set with four tulip petals and a hidden halo that spans the whole length of the stone. From the side, the most subtle split shank flows into the petals. It is so subtle you cannot see it from the top, which is the best way to design it. And the head is set high enough that a wedding band stacks flush underneath.
Three ways we make a band sit flush
- Set the basket higher. A little extra height lets a straight band slide under the head. See setting height.
- Raise the bridge. We have added 2mm to the bridge on a round so the band sits with no gap.
- Indent the bridge. A notch under the stone that the band tucks into, used on our marquise tulips.
What if I want a curved band instead?
A curved or contour band hugs the head instead of sitting under it. It works for lower settings, but you are then tied to that band. A flush straight band keeps your options open.

Why does my wedding band leave a gap?
The head or basket is too low, or the bridge sits in the way. It can be designed out.
Do I need a curved wedding band?
Not if the engagement ring is designed for a straight one to sit flush.
Does a higher basket make the ring catch more?
A little more height is barely noticeable. We keep it as low as the band allows.
How much does a tulip ring designed to stack cost?
A fully custom ring from us starts at about $4,000 USD, and most of the rings we build land between $4,000 and $5,000. Our Ready To Order settings start at $1,299 CAD, plus the diamond. The centre stone moves the price most: in September 2026 a 2 carat lab grown diamond ran about $2,500 CAD and a 3 carat about $2,700 CAD. Real numbers are in our cost guide.
How wide should my wedding band be?
Usually close to the width of the engagement ring's band, or a little thinner. Send us the width you like and we design the gap for it.
