Marquise Tulip Basket Engagement Rings: 5 Ways to Set One
By Clint Casmiro, Co-Founder, Smiro Studio, Toronto · Updated September 28, 2026
Short answer: A marquise and a tulip basket suit each other because the petals stretch the full length of the stone, so the side view looks like a flower. Most marquise tulips use six claw prongs and six petals. From there you choose the extras: a diamond bridge that still lets a band stack, a pavé band with a split shank, gemstones in the petals, leaf engraved prongs, or side stones for more sparkle.
If you want a marquise diamond with a tulip basket, here are five ways we have done it.

If you want a marquise diamond with a tulip basket setting, this is the video. I'm going to show you five different ways to do a marquise with a tulip. First one, six claw prongs, classic marquise on the top, with six beautiful petals extending the entire length of the stone and a diamond bridge that's indented, so a wedding band still stacks. Number two, six claw prongs and massive pavé diamonds. Again, six beautiful petals and the tiniest split shank that shows a half petal on the side prong. Ring number three, six claw prongs with a slightly bigger split shank. When you flip it over, you see these gorgeous pink sapphires tucked into the petals and one right there on the half petal. My favourite, a nice way to add pink. Number four, six claw prongs with leaf engraving on them that flow into six tulip petals, a floral bridge and custom floral engraving all over the band. Probably the most floral on this list. And number five, if you want more diamonds, leaf engraved claw prongs with side stones, but still keeping that tulip basket underneath the centre.
1. Six petals and an indented diamond bridge
Six claw prongs and six petals running the length of the stone. Underneath there is a diamond bridge that is indented, so a wedding band still stacks flush against it.
2. Pavé band and the smallest split shank
Six claw prongs, a band of pavé diamonds, and the tiniest split shank that shows a half petal on the side.
3. Pink sapphires in the petals
Six claw prongs with a slightly bigger split shank. When you flip it over, pink sapphires are tucked into the petals, with one more on the half petal. It is our favourite way to add pink without changing the top view.
4. Leaf engraved prongs and floral engraving
The claw prongs are engraved to look like leaves, and they flow into six tulip petals. Add a floral bridge and floral hand engraving all over the band and you have the most floral ring on this list.
5. Side stones with the basket kept
If you want more diamonds, add side stones. This one has leaf engraved prongs and side stones on the band, and still keeps the tulip basket under the centre stone.
Classic petals or crossover petals?
All five above use classic petals. A crossover tulip, where the petals cross over each other, is another option on a marquise. We compared the two here.

How many prongs does a marquise tulip basket have?
Usually six claw prongs, which become six petals underneath. The two on the tips also protect the points of the marquise.
Can a wedding band sit flush with a marquise tulip?
Yes, if we design for it. An indented bridge or the right basket height lets a straight band stack against the ring.
Can I add colour to a marquise tulip?
Yes. Small sapphires set into the petals add colour that only shows from the side.
How much does a marquise tulip basket ring cost?
A fully custom ring from us starts at about $4,000 USD, and most of the rings we build land between $4,000 and $5,000. Our Ready To Order settings start at $1,299 CAD, plus the diamond. The centre stone moves the price most: in September 2026 a 2 carat lab grown diamond ran about $2,500 CAD and a 3 carat about $2,700 CAD. Hand engraving, a hidden halo, a split shank and gemstones in the petals each add bench time. Real numbers are in our cost guide.
Are marquise diamonds fragile?
The two points are the most exposed part of the stone, so we always protect them with claw or V prongs. Set properly, a marquise wears as well as any other shape.
Does a marquise look bigger than an oval?
Usually, yes. Carat for carat a marquise has the longest outline of the common shapes, so it covers more of the finger.
