Floral, Vintage Scroll or Both: Choosing Band Engraving
By Clint Casmiro, Co-Founder, Smiro Studio, Toronto · Updated October 4, 2026
Short answer: There are three main band engraving styles. Floral is flowers and petals carved along the band. Vintage scroll is classic curling scrollwork with an old world feel. The floral vintage mix weaves flowers into a scroll base and is our most popular. This 2.5 carat marquise has the mix, carved all the way into the half petal.

Custom rings you will never find at your local big box store, featuring this unique engraving all over the band. From the top view, it's this two and a half carat marquise diamond with these six claw prongs. When you flip the ring over, it's just beautiful tulip basket holding up the marquise diamond and the band fully engraved, going right into the half petal on that side profile. Anytime you do a marquise diamond with a tulip basket, it looks so good because this north-south tulip extends so far, giving you such a floral look. And pairing that with this floral and vintage engraving on the band. Truly a unique ring that you will never find at your local big box store.
The ring
A 2.5 carat marquise with six claw prongs. Flip it and there is a tulip basket, and the band is fully engraved right into the half petal on the side profile. A marquise tulip looks so floral because the petals stretch so far along the stone, and the engraving continues that.
Floral
Delicate flowers and petals carved along the band. Can be a single vine or a full bloom wrapping all the way around.
Vintage scroll
Classic curling scrollwork. Elegant and timeless, and it works on both yellow and white gold.
Floral vintage mix
Our most popular. Flowers woven into a scroll base, so you get structure and softness together. That is the style on this ring.
Going fully custom
A specific flower, a tattoo, a place, a birth flower. See the custom pieces on our hand engraving page, and how to tell good from bad engraving.

What is the most popular engraving style?
For us, the floral vintage mix.
Does scroll engraving work on white gold?
Yes. It works on yellow and white gold.
Can engraving go onto the basket?
Yes. On this ring it runs into the half petal.
How much does band engraving cost?
A fully custom ring from us starts at about $4,000 USD, and most of the rings we build land between $4,000 and $5,000. Our Ready To Order settings start at $1,299 CAD, plus the diamond. The centre stone moves the price most: in September 2026 a 2 carat lab grown diamond ran about $2,500 CAD and a 3 carat about $2,700 CAD. Hand engraving adds bench time, and the more of the ring it covers, the more it adds. Real numbers are in our cost guide.
Does engraving make a ring look vintage?
Yes. Hand engraving, especially scroll and milgrain, is one of the details that reads most antique.
