Scroll Engraved Engagement Rings: Six Ways to Do It
By Clint Casmiro, Co-Founder, Smiro Studio · Updated October 22, 2026
Short answer: Scroll engraving is a pattern of curling C and S lines cut along the band, the classic vintage engraving. We carve six scroll styles, from plain Vintage Scroll to scroll mixed with leaves, milgrain or Celtic knots.
If someone says a ring has "vintage engraving", they usually mean scroll. It is the pattern that suits the most rings, because it follows the curve of a band naturally and works on any stone shape.
What is scroll engraving?
Lines that curl back on themselves, like the end of a violin, linked into a running pattern. Each curl is cut by hand, with smaller leaf shapes and shading cuts tucked in. Because it has no picture to read, it looks good from any angle and at any size.

Which scroll styles can I choose?
| Style | What it adds |
|---|---|
| Vintage Scroll | The classic: even curls along the band |
| Floral + Scroll | Flowers woven into the scroll, our most popular style |
| Scroll + Leaf | Leaves sprouting off the curls |
| Scroll with Milgrain | A beaded edge framing the scroll |
| Heirloom Weave | Tighter, interlaced scroll for an older look |
| Celtic Knot + Scroll | A knot that flows into the scroll |

How much of the band should the scroll cover?
Most people keep it to the top of the band, where it shows when you look down at your hand. Banjamin's ring goes the whole way: scroll on the band and bridge, following a photo the client sent us. For the trade-offs of covering more, read engraving on the side of a ring.

Does scroll engraving work on white gold?
Yes. It reads lighter and more silvery than on yellow gold, where the cuts look darker against the warm metal. Our Celtic Knot + Scroll example above is white gold. More in engraving on white gold and platinum.
