A 4 Carat Portuguese Cut Marquise with Celtic Knot Engraving

Short answer: This ring is a 4 carat Portuguese cut marquise with a curved hidden halo that wraps the stone, a custom floral bridge underneath, and hand engraving all over the band. The engraving has two large Celtic knots, one on each shoulder, joined by a single line that runs around the band. The front and back sides of the band are hand engraved too. It is one of our favourite rings we have ever built.

Why a Portuguese cut marquise?
A Portuguese cut adds extra rows of small triangular facets, which gives the stone a busy, kaleidoscope sparkle. On a marquise the effect turns dramatic, because the long points carry the pattern right out to the tips. It reads old world, closer to an antique hand cut stone than a modern marquise.
Portuguese cuts are harder to find in stock than a standard marquise, so sourcing one takes a little longer. More in our Portuguese cut guide.
What is the curved hidden halo?
A hidden halo is a row of small diamonds set under the centre stone, around the basket, so you only see it from the side. On this ring it follows the curve of the marquise and wraps around it. From the top the marquise stands on its own. From the side there is a line of sparkle underneath. See what a hidden halo is.
How does the Celtic knot engraving work?
There are two large Celtic knots, one on each shoulder of the band. A single interconnected line runs through the band from one knot, all the way around, to the knot on the other side. So the pattern reads as one continuous piece rather than two separate motifs.
On top of that, the front and back sides of the band are hand engraved. Hand engraving is cut into the metal by hand at the bench, so each ring comes out slightly different. More on how it works on our hand engraving page.
What is a floral bridge?
The bridge is the piece of metal under the centre stone, between the prongs. On this ring we made it a custom floral design tucked under the marquise. It is another detail you only see from the side, which is the theme of the whole ring: clean from the top, full of detail when you turn it.
Can you make something like this for me?
Yes. Everything on this ring was custom, and every part of it can change: the shape, the cut, the halo, the motif in the engraving. You approve a CAD file and then a 360 render before anything is made.
Heavy hand engraving adds bench time, so plan on the longer end of our 10 to 14 week range. A fully engraved band also usually cannot be resized cleanly later, so we get your size right before we start. See our timeline.
