What Is a Hidden Halo Engagement Ring, and Is It Worth It?

    Short answer: A hidden halo is a row of small diamonds set around the basket underneath the centre stone. From the top you only see the main diamond, and from the side you get a flash of sparkle. It is worth it if you want a clean top view with a detail underneath. On a 4 petal tulip basket we always add one, because it also gives the setting its support.

    It is one of my favourite ways to keep a ring timeless: top view super clean, all the personality underneath.

    What does a hidden halo look like?

    From above, a solitaire. From the side, a thin ring of pavé diamonds wrapped around the base of the head, just under the stone's girdle. People notice it when your hand turns, not at first glance.

    Is a hidden halo worth it?

    Worth it if: you want sparkle from the side, you like a clean top view, or you are doing a 4 petal tulip. Skip it if: you want the lowest possible setting, or you prefer plain gold under the stone for a quieter vintage look.

    Does it make the diamond look bigger?

    Not from the top, which is the point. A regular halo makes the stone look bigger face-up. A hidden halo keeps the stone's true outline and adds sparkle only from the side.

    How does it work with a tulip basket?

    With a 4 petal tulip basket we always add a hidden halo. It is not just for looks, it holds everything together and gives the setting its support. A 6 petal tulip has that support built in, so no hidden halo is needed.

    Can a hidden halo be curved?

    Yes. A curved hidden halo follows the shape of the basket, and we often add one on ovals and movals.

    A halo surrounds the stone and is visible from the top. A hidden halo sits under the stone and shows only from the side.

    Yes. The small diamonds are set into the basket, below the stone, where they are protected.
