Classic vs Crossover Tulip Petals for a Marquise Diamond

    Short answer: A classic tulip basket and a crossover tulip petal basket look exactly the same from the top. The difference is underneath. In a classic tulip, the petals rise up and cup the stone. In a crossover, the petals cross over each other under the marquise, so when you flip the ring over you see a woven, more custom looking basket. It is a detail for you, not for the room.

    What is a tulip basket?

    A setting where the basket under the stone is shaped like petals, so from the side it looks like a flower holding the diamond. It is our signature setting, we have built over 1,000 of them, and it works with every shape. See the tulip baskets page.

    What is a crossover tulip petal?

    Instead of each petal rising on its own, the petals cross over one another underneath the stone. The top view does not change at all. The customization only shows when you turn the ring and look under the marquise.

    Why does it suit a marquise?

    A marquise is long and narrow, so there is a lot of side profile to look at. A crossover gives that long gallery something to do, and it follows the length of the stone. The prongs still sit over the points, which is where a marquise needs protection.

    Classic or crossover: which should I choose?

    • Choose classic if you want the petals to read clearly as a flower from the side.
    • Choose crossover if you like a detail that only you and the people who pick up your hand will ever notice.

    Both look the same from above, so you are not giving anything up on the top view either way. You approve the exact design in a 360 render before we make it.

    What else can hide underneath?

    A lot of our favourite details live in the side profile: a hidden halo, a baby split shank, or a custom bridge under the stone.

    Does a crossover tulip change how the ring looks from the top?

    No. The top view is exactly the same. The difference only shows from the side or when you flip the ring over.

    While we don’t typically work with client-provided settings, we’re open to making exceptions. In such cases, we may be able to ship the completed setting to you for stone setting on your end.

    That said, we also source gemstones and diamonds directly from trusted cutting factories, giving you access to exceptional quality and value if you're looking for a complete piece.

    Warranty & Protection

    At Smiro Studio, we are dedicated to crafting a ring that you will cherish. We keep you involved on every step in the process, with you making the final decision. Once you agree to your final design we will build your final (non-refundable) engagement ring.

    We are committed to standing behind our products, and our one-year warranty covers any production defects (not including the centre stone) from the date of purchase. We take great pride in the quality of our rings and want you to enjoy them for a lifetime.

    In case of lost accent diamonds, we will replace them within the warranty period. Please note that any damage caused by improper care or handling will be repaired at-cost within the warranty period. After the warranty period has ended, repairs may incur a small material and labor fee.

    Modifications or alterations made by another jeweller may void your care package and warranty. We encourage you to trust our expert team with any repairs or alterations to ensure that your ring remains in optimal condition.
