Bigger Is Not Always Better: Ring Details That Beat Carat Size
By Clint Casmiro, Co-Founder, Smiro Studio, Toronto · Updated September 28, 2026
Short answer: A bigger diamond is not the only way to make a ring stand out. On this 2 carat round, three details do the work: a pavé band that tapers from bigger to smaller diamonds so the eye goes to the centre stone, a euro shank at the bottom so the ring sits straight and does not spin, and 2mm of extra height on the bridge so a wedding band stacks flush with no gap.
People are starting to realise bigger carat size does not always mean better. Here is what we would spend on instead.

People are beginning to realise that bigger carat size doesn't always mean better. This is a 2 carat round diamond with these six claw prongs that flow together so perfectly. It's held in this stunning tulip basket that's extremely secure holding the diamond from all sides, with a very nice tapered pavé diamond running up the band. It's the subtle details in a ring that make it unique, and adding this gradual taper from bigger diamonds to smaller diamonds just adds so much more flow to the ring and making that centre stone pop more because it's thinner, allowing more of the focus on that diamond. Plus, we added a euro shank at the bottom of this ring so the whole thing stabilizes a bit more, and then right on the bridge of the ring we added 2 millimetres of height, which will allow a wedding band to stack perfectly flush with no gaps.
The ring in the video
A 2 carat round diamond with six claw prongs that flow together into a tulip basket, which holds the stone from every side.
1. A tapered pavé band
The pavé diamonds step down from bigger near the head to smaller around the finger. The taper adds flow and makes the band thinner where it meets the stone, so the centre diamond pops more. More on this in band width and taper.
2. A euro shank
A euro shank is a squared off section at the bottom of the band. It stabilises the ring on your finger so it stays upright instead of rolling to one side, which matters most with a heavier head.
3. A raised bridge for your wedding band
We added 2mm of height to the bridge, the part under the stone. That lets a straight wedding band slide underneath and sit flush with no gap. See how we make bands sit flush.
Where the money goes further
Going from 2 carats to 3 changes the price a lot and the look less than people expect. Ratio and cut change how big a stone looks more than weight does, which we cover in carat vs ratio. The details above cost far less and you notice them every day.

What is a euro shank?
A squared off bottom section on the band. It keeps the ring from spinning and adds strength.
Does a tapered band make the ring weaker?
No. The taper is gradual and the band stays thick enough underneath.
Can a tulip basket still stack with a wedding band?
Yes, if the bridge is raised or indented. Tell us early and we design for it.
How much does a 2 carat round engagement ring cost?
A fully custom ring from us starts at about $4,000 USD, and most of the rings we build land between $4,000 and $5,000. Our Ready To Order settings start at $1,299 CAD, plus the diamond. The centre stone moves the price most: in September 2026 a 2 carat lab grown diamond ran about $2,500 CAD and a 3 carat about $2,700 CAD. Real numbers are in our cost guide.
Is a 2 carat diamond big enough?
For most hands a 2 carat reads as a big, clear centre stone. Many clients choose 2 carats and spend the difference on details they notice every day.
