Engagement Ring Band Width: Why We Never Go Under 2 mm

Short answer: About 85 to 90 percent of the engagement rings we make have a 2 mm band, and we do not go under 2 mm in gold, because gold thins over 20 to 30 years of wear. Platinum can go to 1.8 mm. A taper, for example 2.5 mm down to 2 mm, makes the band look like it flows into the setting.

What is the most common band width?
2 mm. It is what 85 to 90 percent of our clients choose, and every ring in our store is built at 2 mm.
Why not go thinner than 2 mm?
Gold is malleable and wears down. Over 20 to 30 years a 2 mm band goes to about 1.8, a 1.8 goes to about 1.6, and at 1.6 you are at risk of bending or breaking. The only exception is platinum, which can go to 1.8 mm.
What is a tapered band?
A band that gets slightly narrower toward the stone, for example 2.5 mm down to 2 mm, or 2.6 down to 2.2. Everyone does a flat 2 or 2.2 mm all the way around. A good taper gives the ring movement and life instead of one rigid band. It is subtle and underrated.
What about a split shank?
Our split shanks are cut small and thin, so you barely see them from the top. On a tulip basket, a split shank flows up into the petals much more naturally than a band that just stops at the head.

What width should an engagement ring band be?
2 mm is the most common and the minimum we recommend in gold.
Can a band be 1.5 mm?
We do not recommend it in gold. It thins with wear and becomes fragile.
Does a wider band make the diamond look smaller?
A little. That is one reason a taper works: wider at the back, slimmer near the stone.
Can a thin band be resized?
Usually yes, but very thin or fully engraved bands can be harder to resize.
