14K vs 18K Gold vs Platinum for an Engagement Ring

    Short answer: 14K gold is 58% gold, 18K is 75% gold, and platinum is 95% platinum. For yellow gold we usually recommend 14K: softer colour, more durable, scratches less. For white, platinum stays whiter and is the most durable but is heavier and scuffs more easily. Between 14K and 18K white gold, go 14K.

    What is the difference in gold content?

    14K or 18K yellow gold?

    I like 14K a little better. The colour is softer and more muted, and it is more durable and scratches less. 18K has a more vibrant colour but is a little softer. Can we do 22K or 24K? On special request, yes. We do not recommend it for everyday wear.

    White gold or platinum?

    Platinum is naturally whiter and more durable, and it stays white even as it wears. The downsides: it is heavier and scratches more easily on the surface. White gold starts rhodium plated, and as the plating wears it shows its base colour.

    14K or 18K white gold?

    14K. Both start rhodium plated, and 14K white has a whiter base colour under the plating, plus more durability.

    Can the band be thinner in platinum?

    Yes. Our rule is never under 2 mm in gold, because gold thins over 20 to 30 years. Platinum can go to 1.8 mm.
