Why Champagne Diamonds Look Different Online

In this guide

By Clint Casmiro, Co-Founder, Smiro Studio, Toronto · Updated September 28, 2026

Short answer: It is hard to judge a champagne diamond's colour from a 360 video, because studio lighting, white balance and screens all shift warm tones. A lot of champagne stones on the market end up too dark in real life. The fix is real life video of the actual stone in daylight before anyone buys it, which is what we send every client.

A client asked me this on our call today, and we get it all the time.

We get that question all the time. With champagne diamonds, it's so hard to tell what the right colour is from looking at those 360 videos. A lot of champagne diamonds are getting too dark. When you're working with us, we actually send you real life videos of the champagne diamond before we ever purchase it. That way you can actually validate the colour and not just buy a stone without actually seeing it.

    Why 360 videos mislead

Most online diamond videos are shot in a light box with bright white light. That flattens warm colour. Then your screen adds its own shift. The same stone can look pale straw online and deep brown on your hand.

    What we do instead

We film the actual champagne diamond in real light before we ever purchase it and send you that video. You check the colour yourself and only then do we buy the stone.

    The C1 to C7 scale

Champagne is described in trade shorthand from C1 (light straw) to C7 (deep cognac). Labs do not issue C grades; lighter stones get a letter grade with a brown note and richer ones a fancy colour grade. Our champagne guide has the full table and real prices.

    How to check colour yourself

    1. Ask for daylight video, not a light box 360.
    2. Ask to see it next to a white diamond or white paper.
    3. Watch it on your phone and a laptop. If it looks very different, ask again.
    4. Think about the metal. Yellow gold warms it up. See yellow vs white gold.

    Questions we get about this

Why do champagne diamonds look darker in person?

Light box videos flatten warm colour. In normal light the brown shows more.

Do you buy the stone before I see it?

No. We send real video first and buy it after you confirm.

What is the most popular champagne shade?

Lighter tones are the easiest to wear, and they are harder to find than deep ones.

How much do champagne diamonds cost?

Our loose champagne diamonds run from $3,500 to $4,500 CAD for stones between 2.70 and 4.05 carats, all VS clarity or better, as of September 2026. The ring is on top: a fully custom ring from us starts at about $4,000 USD in total. See the live stones in our champagne collection.

What colour champagne diamond is best?

The one you like in real light. Lighter tones are the easiest to wear every day and are harder to find than deep ones.
