Champagne Diamond in Yellow Gold or White Gold?
By Clint Casmiro, Co-Founder, Smiro Studio, Toronto · Updated September 28, 2026
Short answer: There is no wrong metal for a champagne diamond, but the metal changes the colour you see. A diamond pulls in the colour around it. Yellow gold makes a champagne diamond look warmer and more yellow. White gold or platinum keeps it neutral, so you see its actual shade. If you want the true champagne colour, we recommend white gold or platinum.
Most jewellers will not tell you this, so we will. The metal you pick changes how your champagne diamond looks.

Yellow gold makes your champagne diamond a little bit more warmer, because when light hits the diamond, it pulls in what it's surrounded by. If it's surrounded by yellow gold, it's going to bring it a little bit more yellow. White gold to platinum will make it more neutral, or the actual shade of the champagne colour. If you're ever considering that, I would highly recommend a white gold or a platinum setting. This is also really important, especially when you check your champagne diamonds and you're getting real life videos, because the colouring of a champagne might be a little bit different than what it is in real life.
Why does the metal change the colour?
When light hits a diamond, it pulls in what the stone is surrounded by. The prongs, basket and band all reflect into it. Surround a champagne diamond with yellow metal and it picks up yellow.
Yellow gold: warmer
Yellow gold pushes a champagne diamond warmer and more golden. On a pale champagne that can be lovely if you want the ring to read as one warm tone. On a deeper stone it can tip it further toward brown.
White gold or platinum: true to the stone
White gold and platinum are neutral, so the stone shows its actual champagne shade. That is what we recommend if you chose the stone for its specific colour.
Can I mix them?
Yes. A two tone ring, with white prongs and basket around the stone and a yellow gold band, keeps the colour true where it counts and still gives you yellow gold on the finger. See how the metals compare in our metal guide.
Always see the stone in real light
Champagne colour on a screen can look different from real life. We send real video of every champagne diamond before we buy it, so the colour you choose is the colour you get.

Is yellow gold wrong for a champagne diamond?
No. It warms the stone up. Pick it if you like that look.
Which metal shows the true champagne colour?
White gold or platinum, because they are neutral.
Can I have white prongs with a yellow band?
Yes. A two tone ring keeps the colour true around the stone and gives you a yellow band.
How much do champagne diamonds cost?
Our loose champagne diamonds run from $3,500 to $4,500 CAD for stones between 2.70 and 4.05 carats, all VS clarity or better, as of September 2026. The ring is on top: a fully custom ring from us starts at about $4,000 USD in total. See the live stones in our champagne collection.
Does rose gold suit a champagne diamond?
It pushes the stone warmer and pinker, much like yellow gold pushes it yellow. If you want the true shade, keep white metal around the stone.
Is platinum or white gold better for a champagne diamond?
Both are neutral, so the colour looks the same. Platinum is heavier and denser; white gold is lighter and costs less. See our metal guide.
