The Engagement Ring for Someone Who Does Not Want a Big Diamond
By Clint Casmiro, Co-Founder, Smiro Studio, Toronto · Updated October 4, 2026
Short answer: If the person you are proposing to does not want a large diamond, this is what we would build: a 0.5 carat emerald cut, set east west across the finger, in a half bezel that sits very low. It is secure, it does not catch on anything, and it reads as a beautiful everyday ring rather than a big engagement ring.
Not everyone wants a 3 carat stone on their hand. Some people work with their hands, some love a minimal look, and some just do not want the attention. Here is the ring we would make for them.

If you want to get an engagement ring for someone but they don't actually want a large diamond, this is what I would get. 0.5 carats, emerald cut diamond, east to west set, half bezel, super low, very secure. It is the perfect ring for everyday wear that doesn't feel like a big engagement ring.
What are the specs of this ring?
- Stone: a 0.5 carat emerald cut diamond.
- Direction: east west, so the stone runs across the finger instead of up the hand.
- Setting: a half bezel. Metal wraps the two long sides and the short ends stay open.
- Height: super low, close to the finger.
Why does an emerald cut work as a small diamond?
An emerald cut is a step cut: long, clean facets that give broad flashes of light instead of glitter. At half a carat it looks crisp and architectural, which suits a quiet ring. The rectangular outline also covers more of the band than a round of the same weight.
Why east west?
Turning the stone sideways makes it sit along the band, so the whole ring reads as one shape. It sits lower and snags less. More on this in our guide to east west engagement rings.
Why a half bezel?
A half bezel protects the long edges of the stone with a wall of metal, so there are no prongs to catch on sweaters or hair. Leaving the ends open lets light in and keeps the diamond from looking boxed in. It is one of the most secure ways to wear a diamond every day.
Who is this ring for?
- Someone who does not want a big engagement ring but still wants a diamond.
- People who work with their hands: nurses, chefs, artists, anyone who wears gloves.
- Someone who already wears simple gold jewellery and wants the ring to match it.
Can it still feel special?
Yes. Small rings carry details well because nothing competes with them. A hidden birthstone, initials inside the band, or a little hand engraving on the side all show up on a ring this simple.

Is half a carat too small for an engagement ring?
No. The right size is the one the person will love wearing. A half carat emerald cut set east west looks deliberate, not small.
Is a bezel setting secure?
Yes. A bezel is one of the most secure settings because metal surrounds the edge of the stone instead of a few prongs holding it.
Can a small diamond be set low?
Yes. A smaller stone has a shallower depth, so it can sit very close to the finger, which is part of why this ring wears so easily.
How much does a small east west emerald ring cost?
A fully custom ring from us starts at about $4,000 USD, and most of the rings we build land between $4,000 and $5,000. Our Ready To Order settings start at $1,299 CAD, plus the diamond. The centre stone moves the price most: in September 2026 a 2 carat lab grown diamond ran about $2,500 CAD and a 3 carat about $2,700 CAD. A half carat stone costs far less than the 2 to 3 carat stones most of our clients choose, so the setting is most of the price. Real numbers are in our cost guide.
What is the most practical engagement ring for everyday wear?
A low setting, a bezel or half bezel, and a smaller stone. Nothing sticks up to catch, and the stone is protected by metal.
