His and Hers Wedding Bands with Each Other's Birthstone Inside
By Clint Casmiro, Co-Founder, Smiro Studio, Toronto · Updated September 28, 2026
Short answer: Set a small birthstone on the inside of each wedding band: hers inside his, and his inside hers. Nobody else sees it, and each of you carries the other everywhere. In the set in the video, his is a 6mm band with hidden pavé on both sides and her amethyst inside. Hers is a 3mm round diamond band with his pink tourmaline inside.
Notice this before you buy your wedding bands. It is one of the easiest ways to make a matching set personal.

Make sure you notice before you buy your wedding band, this is a matching set of his and hers bands that we did. His is a 6mm wide band with hidden pavé diamonds on both sides, and hers is a 3mm wide round diamond band, but the unique addition. On the inside of his band, we added her birthstone, so he's always carrying her everywhere he goes. And on the inside of her band, we added his birthstone, which is a pink tourmaline. Such unique additions, but that's how you personalise your wedding band.
The set in the video
- His band: 6mm wide, with hidden pavé diamonds on both sides. Inside the band, her birthstone, a purple amethyst (February).
- Her band: 3mm wide round diamond band. Inside the band, his birthstone, a pink tourmaline (October).
So he is always carrying her, and she is always carrying him.
Which birthstones suit a ring worn every day?
The stone sits flush inside the band, so it is protected, but it still rubs against skin all day. Harder stones last best. Where a month has a softer traditional stone, we suggest the harder alternative.
| Month | Birthstone |
|---|---|
| January | Garnet |
| February | Amethyst |
| March | Aquamarine |
| April | Diamond |
| May | Emerald |
| June | Alexandrite (pearl and moonstone are too soft) |
| July | Ruby |
| August | Peridot |
| September | Sapphire |
| October | Pink tourmaline (opal is too soft) |
| November | Topaz or citrine |
| December | Tanzanite or blue zircon (turquoise is too soft) |
Other places to hide a birthstone
- In the bridge under the diamond on the engagement ring.
- Inside the petals of a tulip basket. We have set a client's birthstone in two of the petals under a full bezel oval.
- Next to a laser engraved date inside the band.

Is a stone inside a ring uncomfortable?
No. It is set flush with the inside of the band, so you do not feel it.
Can the bands still be resized?
Usually, but a stone set inside the band limits how much. Tell us your sizes early. See resizing.
Can we use each other's initials instead?
Yes. Laser engraving inside the band is best for fine text and dates.
Can you put a gemstone inside a wedding band?
Yes. A small stone is set flush on the inside of the band, so it cannot catch and you do not feel it.
Should his and hers wedding bands match?
They do not have to. A set can match in one detail, like a birthstone or an engraving, while each band suits the person wearing it.
