IGI Certified Lab Grown Diamonds: What the Report Tells You

Short answer: Yes, lab grown diamonds come with certificates, and at Smiro Studio every diamond 1 carat and up comes with an IGI report. IGI (International Gemological Institute) grades the stone independently for carat, colour, clarity, cut and measurements, and states that it is lab grown. We also offer a third party appraisal for insurance at $100 CAD.
The certificate is how you know exactly what you own. Here is how to read one.
What does an IGI report show?
Carat weight, colour grade, clarity grade, cut grade where it applies, polish, symmetry, fluorescence and exact measurements in millimetres. A lab grown report states the origin and the growth method, and the report number is laser inscribed on the girdle so you can match stone to paper.
What does it not show?
How the stone looks. Two stones with the same grades can look very different, and a bowtie never appears on a report. That is why we send video of every stone before you choose.
Is IGI as good as GIA?
Both are independent labs. IGI grades most of the lab grown diamonds on the market. We have seen IGI grade lab colour loosely around F, so we check colour on video rather than trusting one letter.
Do small diamonds get certificates?
Our policy is a certificate on every stone 1 carat and up. Small accent diamonds are not individually certified anywhere, because the grading would cost more than the stone.
What is the appraisal for?
Insurance. For $100 CAD we arrange a certified appraisal from a third party gemologist, which gives an independent value for your ring.

We follow the Kimberley Process for natural rough and work with suppliers who document origin. Lab grown stones are made above ground.
