Hand Engraved Oval Engagement Rings: Flowers, Flamingos and Scrollwork
By Clint Casmiro, Co-Founder, Smiro Studio · Updated October 22, 2026
Short answer: On an oval, hand engraving usually goes on the top of the band, the bridge or the gallery rail, where it shows from the side and from above. Our three client builds: a 3.07 carat oval in a six tulip setting with interconnected flowers, a milgrain border and two lilies at the bottom; a 2.5 carat oval in a half bezel with palm trees, flamingos and florals on a 4 mm band; and a 3.53 carat oval with scroll engraving on the gallery rail and the bridge.
An oval keeps the top of the ring calm, which leaves room for the engraving to carry the personality. We carve 56 styles of hand engraving, and these three use them very differently.
Ring 1: interconnected flowers and two lilies

Sim and Christopher's ring: 3.07 carat oval.
- Centre stone
- 3.07 carat oval diamond
- Setting
- Six tulip petals, cathedral
- Band
- 14K yellow gold, tapering from 3 mm at the base to 2.5 mm at the top
- Engraving
- Interconnected flowers along the top side of the band, a milgrain border, two lilies at the bottom
The band slims from 3 mm to 2.5 mm as it rises to the petals, so the engraving is widest at the base. See Sim and Christopher's ring.
Ring 2: palm trees and flamingos on a half bezel

Aly's ring: 2.5 carat oval with a tropical engraving.
- Centre stone
- 2.5 carat oval diamond
- Setting
- Half bezel
- Band
- 18K yellow gold, 4 mm wide
- Engraving
- Palm trees, flamingos, florals and other custom touches inspired by a tropical setting
The wider 4 mm band gives the scenes room. The half bezel keeps the top modern so the band can be the bold part. See Aly's ring.
Ring 3: scroll engraving on the gallery rail

Emma and Kenneth's ring: 3.53 carat oval.
- Centre stone
- 3.53 carat oval diamond
- Setting
- Six tulip petals, a tiny split shank flowing into the petals, cathedral
- Metal and band
- 14K white gold, 2.5 mm
- Engraving
- Scroll engraving along the gallery rail, bridge engraving on both sides
Here the engraving moves under the stone, onto the gallery rail and both sides of the bridge. Read about the rail in what a gallery rail is. See Emma and Kenneth's ring.
Where should the engraving go on an oval?
- Top of the band (ring 1) shows when you look down at your hand.
- All over a wide band (ring 2) makes the band the statement.
- Gallery rail and bridge (ring 3) keep it a side view detail.

How to get an engraved oval like these
Send us the motifs that mean something to you, flowers, a place, a pattern, and where on the ring you want them. If you want an oval tulip under it, the five builds in oval tulip basket rings are a good start.
Engraving is a big part of what we make: 28% of our ring orders over the past year included hand engraving, counted in our ring report. Every ring is designed over video, with no walk-ins or studio visits.
