Are Oval Engagement Rings Still in Style? A Jeweller's Answer, With Prices
By Clint Casmiro, Co-Founder, Smiro Studio · Updated October 22, 2026
Short answer: Yes. Ovals are a big part of what we build, and the ring we are known for is a 3 carat oval in our six petal tulip basket. An oval looks longer on the finger than a round of the same carat, and it suits almost every setting. In our experience the setting is what makes a ring feel current, so the details under the stone matter more than the shape. Our oval settings start at $1,299 CAD plus the diamond.
We hear this from people who love ovals but worry they have seen too many of them. Fair worry. Here is how we think about it, with our real prices at the end.
Why do ovals stay popular?
Two practical reasons. An oval looks longer on the finger than a round of the same carat. And it works in almost every setting we make: solitaire, cathedral, tulip basket, three stone and east-west.
Ovals usually run 1.30 to 1.50 length to width, and the ovals on our listed rings are 1.40 to 1.50. Go higher for a longer, slimmer look, and from about 1.70 you are into moval territory. Ratio changes how big a stone reads more than people expect, see carat vs ratio.
How do you keep an oval from looking like every other one?
Pick a detail, not just a stone. The ways we do it most:
- A tulip basket underneath. From the side you see a flower, and the top stays a clean oval. Five ways to build one in oval tulip basket rings.
- Set it sideways. An east-west oval sits across the finger.
- A different cut. A Portuguese cut or a bowtie-free oval changes how the stone sparkles. Compared in three ways to cut an oval.
- Hand engraving. On the band or the bridge, carved by hand, so no two are alike. See hand engraving.
What should I check on an oval diamond?
The bowtie. Many ovals have a dark band across the middle, and it never shows on a grading report. We check every oval for one before we suggest it and send you video of the actual stone. What a good one and a bad one look like is in oval diamond bowtie.
Then ask for the measurements in millimetres, not only the carat weight. Carat is weight. Two ovals of the same carat can look quite different once they are set.
