Curved vs Straight Wedding Band: Which Fits Your Ring?
By Clint Casmiro, Co-Founder, Smiro Studio · Updated October 22, 2026
Short answer: It depends on how high the engagement ring sits. A straight band sits flush against a ring set at medium height, with a bridge under the stone, and 89% of our ring orders are specced for exactly that. A curved or contour band hugs the head of a lower ring, where a straight band would hit the prongs or the basket. Decide before the engagement ring is made, because the height is designed in.

Most people pick the band after the ring. The band that fits is mostly decided by the ring, so here is how the two connect.
What is the difference?
A straight band is an even line all the way round. A curved or contour band dips in the middle so it can wrap around the head of an engagement ring that sits low.
Which one fits my engagement ring?
| Setting height | Straight band | Curved or contour band |
|---|---|---|
| Medium: a bridge under the stone | Sits flush | Not needed |
| Medium low: prongs come out of the bridge | Touches the prongs | Often the better fit |
| Low: no bridge, stone just above the finger | Hits the basket | Hugs the head |
80 to 90 percent of the rings we make are medium height, so a straight band stacks flush by design. All three heights are explained in setting height: medium, medium low or low.
Can a straight band sit flush with a tulip basket or a tall setting?
Yes, if it is planned for. A tall basket needs room under the head: we either set it higher, raise the bridge (we once added 2 mm on a round), or cut a notch under the stone for the band to tuck into. Each one, with photos, is in will a wedding band sit flush with a tulip basket?
When is a curved band the better choice?
When the engagement ring sits low. A low setting catches less on hair, sweaters and gloves, and the trade-off is that a straight band will not sit flush against it, so a curved band, or a small gap, is the plan from the start. See low profile engagement rings.

Questions we get about this
Should I get a curved or straight wedding band?
Go by the engagement ring's height. A straight band sits flush against a medium height ring. A curved band suits a medium low or low ring.
Will a straight wedding band sit flush with my engagement ring?
If the ring is set at medium height with a bridge under the stone, yes. 89% of our ring orders are specced for that.
What is a contour wedding band?
A band that curves in the middle so it wraps around the head of an engagement ring that sits low.
Can you make a wedding band for a ring from another jeweller?
Send photos of the ring from the top and the side before the video call. How high its head sits tells us whether to design a straight or a curved band.
