Does Ring Engraving Wear Off? How Long It Lasts
By Clint Casmiro, Co-Founder, Smiro Studio · Updated October 22, 2026
Short answer: Hand engraving is cut into the metal, so it doesn't rub off like a print, but fine detail does soften over years of wear. The top of the band and the palm side soften first, while the bridge and gallery rail, tucked under the stone, change least. Shallow cuts and laser text fade sooner, and every polish takes off a little. Our one year warranty covers manufacturing defects, not wear.
Gold is soft, so some change over the years is normal on a ring worn through work, the gym and dishes. Where the engraving sits and how deep it is cut decide how much.
Which parts of the engraving wear first?
The parts that touch the world. On a band engraved all the way round, the underside rubs against the next finger and anything you hold, so it softens first. The top of the band takes knocks too. Engraving on the bridge and the gallery rail sits under the head, out of reach, which is one reason the bridge is Clint's favourite spot for it.

Left, Banjamin's ring is engraved almost everywhere. Right, the bridge of Vinh's ring sits under the stone, where little touches it.
Does hand engraving last longer than laser engraving?
Yes. A hand cut goes deeper and has polished walls, so it keeps its shape as the surface wears down around it. Laser marks are shallow by nature, which is fine inside the band, where the metal rests on skin rather than on desks and door handles. On the outside of a ring, a shallow mark is the first thing to blur.
How do I keep engraving looking sharp?
- Clean the grooves. Lotion and soap collect in the cuts and make them look flat. Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush lift it out.
- Take it off for heavy work. Weights, rock climbing and gardening scrape the top and palm side of a band.
- Go easy on polishing. Each polish removes a thin layer of metal, and engraving is cut into that layer. A wipe with a soft cloth is enough between cleanings.

Does engraving weaken the ring?
Not when the band is built for it. We design engraved bands with room for the cuts, and our engraved client rings sit on bands from 2 mm up to 4 mm wide. Where a band will be fully carved, we plan its width and thickness in the CAD before anything is cut.

The top of Riley and Tyler's band: deep scroll cuts with milgrain along the edges.
Is white gold or yellow gold better for engraving that lasts?
Both hold engraving well. White gold is usually rhodium plated, and the plating wears from the high spots over time, which can make the cuts look darker until it is redone. More on that in what rhodium plating is and in engraving on white gold and platinum.

Questions we get about this
Does ring engraving wear off?
It doesn't rub off, because it is cut into the metal, but fine detail softens over years of wear. The top and palm side of the band soften first; engraving under the stone changes least.
Does laser engraving wear off?
It is shallower than hand engraving, so it blurs sooner on the outside of a ring. Inside the band, against skin, it lasts well.
How do you clean an engraved ring?
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush, worked gently into the grooves, then rinse and dry.
Does polishing remove engraving?
Each polish takes off a thin layer, so heavy or frequent polishing softens engraving. A soft cloth is enough between cleanings.
Where should engraving go if I work with my hands?
On the bridge or gallery rail, under the stone, where nothing rubs against it.
