Bridge Engraving on an Engagement Ring
By Clint Casmiro, Co-Founder, Smiro Studio · Updated October 22, 2026
Short answer: The bridge is the small arch of metal under the head, between the stone and the band, seen from the side. It is Clint's favourite spot to engrave, and we offer 15 named bridge styles. It stays hidden from the top and does not change how a wedding band stacks.
Clint's favourite place on a ring is one most people never look at. From above, a bridge-engraved ring looks like a clean solitaire. Turn it sideways and there is a scene under the diamond.
Where exactly is the bridge on a ring?
Look at the ring side-on. The band rises up both sides to meet the head, and the curved piece of metal joining them under the stone is the bridge. On a cathedral setting it sits between the two arches; under a tulip basket it sits below the petals.

The bridge of Vinh's ring: two floral patterns, one per half, framed by milgrain.
What can be engraved on the bridge?
Small scenes with a clear outline work best, because the space is a narrow curve. Our 15 bridge styles: Water Lily, Vintage, Vintage Waves, Tulips & Hearts, Sunflowers, Stars, North Star + Little Stars, Leaves, Initials, Flowing Mountains, Floral Branch, Cherry Blossom, Birds, Airplanes & Stars and 3 Flowers.

Birds, left, and 3 Flowers, right, two of our 15 bridge styles.
Why put engraving on the bridge instead of the band?
- It is private. Only the wearer, and anyone she shows, sees it.
- It stays sharp. Tucked under the head, it rarely touches anything.
- It keeps stacking simple. The band stays smooth, so a straight wedding band sits flush beside it.
- It can split in two. One side for each person: Shawali and Jaspal's ring has waves on one side and stars on the other.
Can the bridge mix engraving with stones?
Yes. Chen's ring has diamonds on one side of the bridge and floral engraving with initials on the other. Kirt and Amber's ring pairs constellation engraving with three emeralds on each side of the bridge.

Emen and Rayyan's ring: three flowers on the bridge, scroll on the band.
Does every setting have a bridge?
Most raised settings do: cathedral, tulip basket and most solitaires. Very low bezel settings have little or no bridge. If you want bridge engraving, we shape the head and band to leave room for it. The gallery rail, just above the bridge, is another hidden spot; see engraved gallery rails.
