Engraved Gallery Rail: Detail Under the Diamond

In this guide

Short answer: An engraved gallery rail has a pattern cut into the thin strip of metal that circles under the stone, above the bridge. The space is narrow, so fine scroll and small leaves work best there. On our rings it is usually paired with engraving on the bridge or band.

A gallery rail is easy to miss: a thin rail of metal joining the prongs below the stone. Engraving turns it into a line of detail you catch every time the ring is seen side-on.

    What is a gallery rail?

A horizontal rail that links the prongs a little below the stone, giving the head strength and a clean side line. It sits above the bridge. We explain the part itself in what a gallery rail is; this guide is about carving it.

What engraving fits on a gallery rail?

Fine, continuous patterns. The rail is only a few millimetres tall, so a running scroll or a chain of small leaves reads clearly, while a detailed picture would get lost.

What does an engraved gallery rail look like on a finished ring?

Riley and Tyler's ring shows it best: the rail under the 4.52 carat Dutch marquise is carved with scroll that flows into the engraved half bezel above and the band below, so the whole side view reads as one pattern. Barnaby's ring carries engraving through the bridge, gallery rail and band top in the same way.

Can a tulip basket have an engraved gallery rail?

Yes. On a tulip, the petals cover part of the rail, so the engraving shows between and below them, as on Emma and Kenneth's ring. On a plain cathedral the full rail is on show. Our catalogue Emerald Hand Engraved setting carries hand engraved detail through its band and setting.

Should I engrave the gallery rail or the bridge?

Pick the gallery rail for a fine line that frames the stone; pick the bridge for a picture or initials. Many of our rings do both. See bridge engraving for the bridge styles.
