    Short answer: A Dutch marquise is a marquise with a more angular outline, with straight, faceted shoulders instead of one smooth curve, and an antique style facet pattern. It looks sharper and more architectural than a standard marquise. We also cut our own crisscut Dutch marquise, with a crisscross facet pattern that gives it a sparkle a regular marquise cannot.

    It is one of the shapes most jewellers never stock, and one we build a lot.

    How is a Dutch marquise different from a regular marquise?

    The outline. A regular marquise curves smoothly from point to point. A Dutch marquise breaks that curve into straighter sides, so it looks a little like an elongated hexagon with points. It usually comes with step or antique style faceting instead of a brilliant pattern.

    What is a crisscut Dutch marquise?

    Our own build: a Dutch marquise outline with a crisscut facet pattern. Sharp points, long clean lines and a sparkle that is brighter than a step cut. If you want something almost nobody has seen, this is it.

    What clarity does a Dutch marquise need?

    If it is step cut, go VVS2 or better. Step cuts have long open facets, and an inclusion can reflect through the whole stone. For brilliant or crisscut faceting, VS1 is eye clean.

    How should the points be protected?

    With V prongs or claws at each tip. A marquise point is the thinnest part of the stone, so we always cover it.
