How to Find a Private Jeweller You Can Trust
By Clint Casmiro, Co-Founder, Smiro Studio · Updated October 22, 2026
Short answer: Start with their finished work, not their ads: real client rings with names and specs, and reviews that describe the process. Then check three things before any deposit: who designs and makes the ring, whether you approve a 3D design and see the actual diamond on video, and what the deposit and warranty cover, in writing.

This is how we would vet a jeweller, including us.
Where do people find a private jeweller?
Search, reviews, a friend's ring, or a video. Many of our clients find us on Instagram or TikTok first and book a call from there. However you find one, judge them on the same proof below.
"Near me" matters less than it used to if the jeweller works by video. We work with clients across Canada and the US, and half of our ring orders since December 2025 were from US couples.
What proof should I look for?
- Finished client rings, not only renders. Ours are published with the stone, metal and details, like Zuzia and Travis's 3.01 ct emerald cut. More in our client rings.
- Reviews about the process. Look for how the design rounds and delivery went, beyond the ring itself. We are rated 5.0 from 178 Google reviews; read them.
- Named people. You should know who designs it, who sources the stone and who makes it. Ours are on our team page.
- Certificates. Our stones of 1 carat and up come with an IGI certificate, and an independent appraisal is available for $100 CAD.
What should happen before I pay a deposit?
You should have a price for your exact spec in writing. With us, the estimate lands in your inbox within the hour after the call: the same number, the full spec and a payment link. Half starts the 3D design and the diamond search, and the balance is due when you see the finished ring.
Read the policies before that point, not after. Our deposits are non-refundable once paid, custom rings are final sale, and the one year warranty covers production defects. The return and refund policy is short.
What are the warning signs?
- A stock photo of the diamond shape instead of video of your stone.
- No names: you can't tell who will design or make the ring.
- A price that moves when the spec has not.
- A rush to pay on the first call.
- No certificate for a larger centre stone.
- Vague answers about what the warranty leaves out.
What should I ask on the first call?
We wrote the full list, with our own answers next to each, in 9 questions to ask a custom jeweller. What our own call covers is in engagement ring consultation: what to expect.

Questions we get about this
How do I find a private jeweler near me?
Search for one, then judge them on finished client rings and reviews. If they work by video, distance matters less: we work with clients across Canada and the US.
How do I know a jeweler is trustworthy?
Named people, finished client rings, reviews about the process, the actual diamond on video with its certificate, and the deposit terms in writing.
Should I pay a deposit to a private jeweller?
A deposit is normal for custom work. Ours is half, it starts the design and the diamond search, and it is non-refundable once paid, so ask every question first.
What should I ask a jeweller before buying an engagement ring?
Who designs and makes it, whether you approve a 3D design first, what the price includes, and whether you see the actual diamond. Our full list is in 9 questions to ask a custom jeweller.
Can I work with a private jeweller in another city?
Yes, if they work by video. Half of our ring orders since December 2025 were from US couples.
