Sapphire vs Diamond Engagement Ring: Durability, Colour and Price
By Clint Casmiro, Co-Founder, Smiro Studio · Updated October 22, 2026
Short answer: Both hold up to daily wear: a diamond is 10 on the Mohs hardness scale and a sapphire is 9, second only to diamond. A diamond has more fire, a sapphire brings deeper colour. On price, a 2 carat lab grown diamond ran a median of $2,546 CAD in our 2026 listings, while our natural pink and padparadscha sapphires are listed from $2,050 to $37,740 CAD, because colour and origin can put two stones of the same weight thousands of dollars apart. Can't decide? Keep a diamond on top and hide sapphires underneath.
We set both. Here is the comparison we go through on a call: hardness, look and price.
Which is more durable?
Diamond, but both are made for an engagement ring. A diamond is carbon and scores 10 on the Mohs hardness scale. A sapphire is corundum and scores 9, still very hard and fine for everyday wear.
How do they look different?
A diamond has more fire, the flashes of colour you see when it moves. A sapphire tends to carry deeper, more saturated colour. Sapphire colours go well beyond blue. Yellow and green sapphires usually cost the least, fine blues and pinks cost more, and padparadscha, a mix of pink and orange, is the rarest.
Colour is the whole point of a sapphire, and photos rarely get it right. We film every coloured stone so you see the real colour before you choose.
Which one costs more?
| Stone | Price (CAD) |
|---|---|
| 2 ct lab grown diamond, IGI certified (median) | $2,546 |
| 2 ct natural diamond, mostly I to J colour (median) | $9,905 |
| Natural pink, peach and padparadscha sapphires, 1.05 to 3.34 ct, loose | $2,050 to $37,740 |
Diamonds: priced through our ring builder, June to September 2026. Sapphires: our natural pink sapphire listings, October 2026.
Weight is not what drives a sapphire's price. On our list, a 1.73 carat raspberry pink sapphire is $10,515 and a 2.08 carat bubblegum pink is $5,160. Colour, treatment and origin decide it. See every stone with its price and video in natural pink sapphires.
What should I check on a sapphire?
The lab report. It tells you whether the stone is heated or unheated, and our listings show the report and, where we have it, the country it was mined in. Our pink sapphires come from places like Madagascar, Mozambique and Burma, with reports from labs like GRS and GIA.
Can I have both?
Yes, and plenty of people do. Keep a white diamond on top and set small sapphires in the petals of a tulip basket, in a coloured hidden halo, or in the bridge. From the top it is a diamond, and the colour shows when the ring turns. See sapphires hidden in the tulip petals.
Want pink but the hardness of a diamond? A pink lab grown diamond costs far less than a natural pink diamond. Compared in pink lab diamonds vs natural pink sapphires, and all our sapphire options are on sapphire engagement rings.

Is a sapphire or a diamond better for an engagement ring?
Both work for daily wear. Pick a diamond for fire and the hardest stone, 10 on the Mohs scale. Pick a sapphire for colour, at 9.
Is a sapphire cheaper than a diamond?
Not always. Our natural pink and padparadscha sapphires are listed from $2,050 to $37,740 CAD, while a 2 carat lab grown diamond ran a median of $2,546 CAD in our 2026 listings. A natural diamond of the same size costs far more.
Are sapphires durable enough for an engagement ring?
Yes. Sapphire is 9 on the Mohs scale, second only to diamond, and holds up to daily wear.
Can I see the sapphire before I buy?
Yes. We film every coloured stone and send you the video before you choose.
