What Is a Tulip Setting? The Parts, Shown From the Side

Short answer: A tulip setting, also called a tulip basket, is a prong setting where each prong opens into a petal, so the basket under the diamond looks like a flower from the side and a clean solitaire from the top. We have built over 1,000, and our tulip settings start at $2,199 CAD in 14K gold, before the diamond.

It is the setting we are known for. Here are the parts, named and shown, with photos of rings we list.

What does a tulip setting look like?

Two different rings, depending on where you stand. Look down at the hand and you see the diamond and its claws, nothing else. Look at the hand from the side and you see the petals opening under the stone.

The same ring two ways: side on, then from above. Our Oval Tulip Six Petal, $2,199 CAD in 14K gold, setting only.

What are the parts of a tulip setting?

Six parts, from the stone down:

    • Claws. The tips that touch and hold the diamond, like on any prong setting.
    • Petals. Each prong is a double wire that opens into a petal shape below its claw. Two wires meet at each claw, which is why the setting is so sturdy.
    • The basket. All the petals together, the flower you see from the side.
    • Support. On a 6 petal basket the petals brace each other. A 4 petal basket gets a hidden halo, a gallery rail or half petals to tie it together.
    • The bridge. The bar under the basket, between the two sides of the band. On a medium height ring it leaves room for a straight wedding band to sit flush.
    • The shoulders. Arched up into the basket on a cathedral, or running straight in on a solitaire.

Why double wires matter is in is a tulip basket more secure than regular prongs.

Is a tulip setting the same as a tulip basket?

Yes. Tulip setting, tulip basket, tulip petal setting, petal setting, petal prongs, flower prong setting, floral basket and flower basket setting all describe the same idea: prongs shaped into petals under the stone. Some jewellers say lotus setting too, and because the flower only shows from the side, some people call it a hidden flower. We say tulip basket, and our full page on it is the tulip basket page.

How many petals does a tulip setting have?

Four or six, sometimes with smaller half petals between them. Six is our most popular.
