Bezel Set Emerald Cut Engagement Rings: One Low, One Lifted
By Clint Casmiro, Co-Founder, Smiro Studio · Updated October 22, 2026
Short answer: A bezel set emerald cut has a thin rim of metal wrapped around the whole stone instead of prongs. It protects the four cut corners, which are where an emerald cut chips, and gives a smooth modern outline. Our two client builds: a 3.01 carat emerald in a thin bezel with softly rounded corners over a low profile, floral engraved basket in 18K white gold, and a 2 carat emerald in an ultra thin bezel on a cathedral in 14K yellow gold.
A bezel is the most protective way to set an emerald cut. Here are two, one low and engraved, one lifted and plain.
Ring 1: 3.01 carats, low and engraved underneath

Zuzia and Travis's ring: 3.01 carat emerald cut in 18K white gold.
- Centre stone
- 3.01 carat emerald cut diamond
- Setting
- Thin full bezel with softly rounded corners, low profile basket
- Metal and band
- 18K white gold, low dome 2.5 mm band
- Details
- Floral engraving on the basket, seen from the side
From the top it is understated. The detail is underneath: the low basket carries floral hand engraving that shows when the ring turns. See Zuzia and Travis's ring.
Ring 2: 2 carats in an ultra thin bezel on a cathedral

Nick's ring: 2 carat emerald cut in 14K yellow gold.
- Centre stone
- 2 carat emerald cut diamond
- Setting
- Ultra thin full bezel, cathedral
- Metal and band
- 14K yellow gold, slim 2 mm flat band
The minimal version. The ultra thin bezel shows as much of the stone as possible, and the cathedral gives it a lift from the side. See Nick's ring.
Low profile or cathedral under a bezel?
Low (ring 1) sits close to the finger and catches less. A cathedral (ring 2) lifts the stone and shows the shoulders from the side. The trade-offs are in setting height: medium, medium low or low.
Why a thin bezel?
- More stone shows. A thick bezel can make a stone look smaller. A thin one keeps the full outline.
- The corners are safe. All four cut corners sit inside metal.
- Rounded corners soften it. Ring 1's bezel has softly rounded corners, which makes the rectangle a little gentler.
Bezels also pair with tulip baskets, see a full bezel with a tulip basket underneath.
How to get a bezel emerald like these
Tell us the size, white or yellow, and low or lifted. Then decide if you want something hidden underneath, like engraving or a stone. Start from bezel settings or emerald cut rings.
Diamonds of 1 carat and up come with an IGI certificate. If you are still choosing the emerald cut itself, the diamond buying guide covers clarity on step cuts.

Is a bezel setting good for an emerald cut?
Yes. A full bezel covers all four cut corners, which are the most exposed part of an emerald cut, so it is the most protective option.
Does a bezel make a diamond look smaller?
A thick one can. A thin bezel, like both rings on this page, keeps the full outline of the stone.
Can a bezel ring sit low on the finger?
Yes. The 3.01 carat ring here has a low profile basket under the bezel.
Can you engrave under a bezel?
Yes. The 3.01 carat ring here has floral engraving on the basket, which you see from the side.
