Emerald Cut Tulip Basket Engagement Rings: Four Petals or Six
By Clint Casmiro, Co-Founder, Smiro Studio · Updated October 22, 2026
Short answer: An emerald cut works in a tulip basket because the petals can sit under the long sides and the cut corners, so the top view stays a crisp rectangle and the flower only shows from the side. Our three client builds: a 3.29 carat emerald with four full petals and four half petals in a two tone setting, a 3.03 carat emerald in a six tulip basket, and a 2.06 carat emerald with chunkier petal prongs, engraving and milgrain.
We have built over a thousand tulip baskets. An emerald cut asks for a slightly different basket, because the stone has straight sides and four cut corners. Here is how three clients did it.
Ring 1: four petals, four half petals, hidden from the top

Oscar's ring: the petals only show from the side.
- Centre stone
- 3.29 carat emerald cut diamond
- Setting
- Tulip basket with four full petals and four half petals, four claw prongs, cathedral
- Metal
- 14K yellow gold with a two tone setting
The petals were kept hidden from the top view on purpose, so all the attention stays on the long step cut shape. The white setting against the yellow band gives the contrast. See Oscar's ring.
Ring 2: a six tulip basket and a tucked cathedral

Christopher's ring: 3.03 carat emerald, six tulip basket.
- Centre stone
- 3.03 carat emerald cut diamond
- Setting
- Six tulip basket, tucked cathedral
- Metal and band
- 14K yellow gold, 2 mm half round band
Six petals instead of four, which gives the basket more of a flower from the side. The tucked cathedral pulls the shoulders in close under the stone. See Christopher's ring.
Ring 3: chunkier petals with engraving and milgrain

Xavier's ring: 2.06 carat emerald with a vintage feel.
- Centre stone
- 2.06 carat emerald cut diamond, 1.44 ratio
- Setting
- Slightly chunkier petal prongs, four main tulips and four half tulips
- Band
- 14K yellow gold euroshank, engraving on three sides continuing onto the bridge, milgrain along the top
This is the vintage version. Thicker petals read fuller from the side, and the same hand engraving pattern runs from the band onto the bridge. See Xavier's ring.
Four petals or six on an emerald cut?
Four petals with half petals (rings 1 and 3) fill the cut corners and keep the basket compact. Six petals (ring 2) give a fuller flower. Both keep the top view clean. The full comparison is in 4 petal vs 6 petal tulip baskets, and every basket style is on our tulip basket page.
What to check on the emerald cut itself
- Clarity matters more. Step cuts have long open facets, so inclusions show more than in a brilliant cut. Look at the stone, not just the grade.
- Pick a ratio. Ring 3 is a 1.44 ratio. Longer ratios look slimmer on the finger, see carat vs ratio.
- Protect the corners. The cut corners are where an emerald cut chips. Claw prongs or petals over them do that job.
How to get an emerald tulip like these
Send us the ring you like most of the three and the stone size you are thinking about, and say whether you want the petals hidden from the top or showing. Start from the emerald cut collection or the tulip rings.
All three were designed with the client over video, and emerald cuts of 1 carat and up come with an IGI certificate. What rings like these cost is on our pricing page.

Can you put an emerald cut in a tulip basket?
Yes. We have built it with four petals and four half petals, and with six petals. The petals can sit low enough that you only see them from the side.
Will the petals show from the top?
Only if you want them to. On the 3.29 carat ring on this page the petals were kept hidden from the top view so the emerald cut stays a clean rectangle.
How many prongs does an emerald cut tulip basket have?
Usually four claw prongs, one on each cut corner, which become the petals underneath.
Can I add engraving to an emerald cut tulip?
Yes. The 2.06 carat ring here has engraving on three sides of the band, continuing onto the bridge, with milgrain along the top.
Do emerald cuts show inclusions more?
They can. The long, open facets of a step cut make inclusions easier to see than in a brilliant cut, so clarity matters more on an emerald cut.
