Does Diamond Shape Change Engagement Ring Price? Our Prices
By Clint Casmiro, Co-Founder, Smiro Studio · Updated October 22, 2026
Short answer: Less than most people expect. On our list a setting costs the same in every shape: a hidden halo solitaire is $1,599 CAD whether it holds a round, oval, cushion, emerald, pear, marquise or radiant. With a 2 carat lab grown diamond in the same style, our full bezel cathedral is $3,300 CAD in cushion, emerald and pear alike. The exception is a specialty cut: our six petal tulip split shank is $3,400 CAD as a marquise or hexagon and $4,100 CAD as a moval.

Shape gets blamed for a lot of price differences that really come from the setting. Here is our own list, side by side, as of October 2026.
Does the setting cost more for some shapes?
| Setting, 14K gold | Price | Shapes at that price |
|---|---|---|
| Hidden halo solitaire | $1,599 | Round, oval, cushion, emerald, pear, marquise, radiant |
| Tulip with hidden halo | $2,299 | Round, oval, cushion, emerald, pear, radiant |
Setting only, CAD, centre diamond not included. Listed October 2026.
What about the same ring with a diamond in it?
| Complete ring, 2 ct lab grown diamond, 14K gold | Shape | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Full bezel cathedral | Cushion, emerald or pear | $3,300 |
| Full bezel low profile | Cushion or emerald | $3,300 |
| Six petal tulip split shank | Marquise or hexagon | $3,400 |
| Six petal tulip split shank | Moval | $4,100 |
CAD, listed October 2026. Lab grown centre stones are IGI certified, F colour and up, VS1 and up.
The moval is the outlier. It is a specialty cut, and some shapes cost more to cut. More on it in what is a moval cut diamond.
What is the lowest price for each shape?
| Shape | Lowest complete ring with a 2 ct lab grown diamond | Ring |
|---|---|---|
| Cushion | $3,100 | Compass set cathedral |
| Emerald | $3,100 | East west |
| Round | $3,300 | Six petal tulip solitaire |
| Pear | $3,300 | Full bezel cathedral |
| Marquise | $3,400 | Six petal tulip split shank |
| Radiant | $3,500 | Tulip full bezel |
| Oval | $3,650 | Four petal tulip, curved hidden halo |
| Moval | $4,100 | Six petal tulip split shank |
14K gold, CAD, listed October 2026. Each shape's lowest price is a different setting, so this shows the starting point, not the effect of shape alone.
So where does shape change the price?
- The cut. Specialty and custom cuts, like the moval, a Dutch marquise or a Portuguese cut, cost more to cut. See custom cut diamonds.
- How big it looks. Carat is weight. An elongated shape can look bigger than a round of the same carat, which can let you spend less on carat. See carat vs ratio.
- Clarity needs. Step cuts like the emerald show inclusions more, so we suggest VVS2 or better, while VS1 is eye clean on brilliant shapes.
