Milgrain vs Engraving: What Each One Is
By Clint Casmiro, Co-Founder, Smiro Studio · Updated October 22, 2026
Short answer: Milgrain is a line of tiny metal beads pressed along an edge, like a border. Engraving is a pattern cut into the flat surface, like a picture. They are often used together, as on Paulina and Calder's band and Vinh's bridge. Milgrain alone gives a vintage edge without a pattern.
People mix these up because they show up on the same rings. Below they are apart and together, on rings we have made.
What is milgrain on a ring?
A row of tiny beads, rolled along an edge with a wheel tool. It catches light as a dotted line and softens a hard edge. You find it on the edges of a band, around a bezel or along a bridge. It has no picture in it; it is a border.

What does milgrain look like next to engraving?
On Paulina and Calder's radiant, flowers are engraved along the top of the band and a milgrain line runs down each edge. On Vinh's old mine cushion, the bridge has a row of engraved flowers between two milgrain borders. The milgrain is what makes each panel look finished.

Milgrain or engraving: which should I choose?
| Milgrain | Engraving | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Beads along an edge | A pattern cut into a surface |
| Look | Vintage, subtle, a dotted line | Anything from a vine to a full scene |
| Where | Band edges, bezels, bridges | Band, bridge, gallery rail, bezel edge, prongs |
| On its own | Clean with a quiet vintage edge | Detailed; often finished with milgrain |
| Wear | Beads soften with years of wear | Cut into the metal; fine detail softens slowly |

Choose milgrain alone if you want a plain band with a little texture. Choose engraving if you want a pattern or a story. Choose both if you want the full vintage look.
Is milgrain the same as filigree?
No. Filigree is openwork: metal formed into lacy shapes with gaps you can see through. Milgrain is a beaded edge on solid metal. Engraving is cut into solid metal. Our rings use milgrain and engraving; the open, lacy effect comes from the tulip basket instead.
Does milgrain wear down?
Slowly, like any texture on the outside of a ring. The beads on the band edges soften over years of wear, more on the palm side. Milgrain on a bridge or bezel, under the stone, keeps its shape longest. We cover care in does ring engraving wear off.
