Mountain Engagement Rings: Ranges Engraved by Hand
By Clint Casmiro, Co-Founder, Smiro Studio · Updated October 22, 2026
Short answer: A mountain engagement ring has a mountain range hand engraved into the metal, usually on the bridge under the stone or on the shoulders of the band. We have built both for clients: a 2.01 carat oval tulip with mountain engraving on the bridge, and a 2.51 carat marquise in 18K yellow gold with mountain engraving on both shoulders and 22 different flowers across the ring.
We carve 56 styles of hand engraving, and mountains mix well with most of them.
Where do the mountains go on an oval tulip?
On the bridge, under the stone, where they show from the side without taking over the design.

Alex's ring: 2.01 carat oval.
- Centre stone
- 2.01 carat oval diamond
- Setting
- Four prongs, tulip basket, hidden halo, cathedral
- Band
- 14K yellow gold, euroshank
- Engraving
- Mountains on the bridge
From the top it is a classic oval tulip. The mountains are the detail you show people when they ask. See Alex's ring.
Can mountains go on the band with other engraving?
Yes. On this marquise the mountains sit on both shoulders and 22 different flowers are engraved across the rest of the ring.

Daryll's ring: 2.51 carat marquise, 18K yellow gold.
- Centre stone
- 2.51 carat marquise diamond
- Setting
- Cathedral, four claw prongs and two V prongs
- Band
- 18K yellow gold, 4 mm flat, engraved throughout
- Engraving
- Mountain inspired engraving on both shoulders, subtle detail on the bridge, 22 different flowers across the ring
The 4 mm flat band gives the scene room, and the V prongs protect the two points of the marquise. See Daryll's ring.
What else can go with mountains?
Anything that belongs to the same story. On our Ashoka cut ring the mountains mark where the proposal happened, next to stars, a lotus and the Himalayas. Flowers, stars and initials all sit well beside a mountain range.
How is a mountain engraving made?
By hand, from a reference you send us: a photo of the range, a trail, or a view. We draw the outline to fit the space on the bridge or the shoulders, then engrave it by hand. If you want to know what good engraving looks like before you choose a jeweller, read good vs bad hand engraving.
How do you send us your mountains?
Send us the place, and tell us where on the ring you want it. Browse engraved rings for settings to start from.
Hand engraving is on 28% of our ring orders since December 2025, counted in the SMIRO Ring Report.
