Moval Tulip Basket Engagement Rings, from 2 to 3.57 Carats
By Clint Casmiro, Co-Founder, Smiro Studio · Updated October 22, 2026
Short answer: A moval sits between a marquise and an oval, and in a tulip basket it usually takes six claw prongs that turn into six petals. Our three client builds: a 2 carat moval in 18K yellow gold with a gallery rail and a small split shank, a 3.5 carat moval with a hidden halo, a split shank and diamonds on the bridge, and a 3.57 carat moval in a two tone white and yellow gold setting on a euroshank.
A moval's soft tips suit tulip petals, and all three rings here sit on six prongs. Here are three we built, from simplest to most detailed.
Ring 1: 2 carats, six petals and a gallery rail

Shankave's ring: 2 carat moval in 18K yellow gold.
- Centre stone
- 2 carat moval diamond
- Setting
- Six claw prongs into six tulip petals, gallery rail, cathedral
- Band
- 18K yellow gold, 2.4 mm, a small split shank that blends into the tulip
The gallery rail adds structure under the petals, and the small split shank gives a double band look without weight. See Shankave's ring.
Ring 2: 3.5 carats with a hidden halo and bridge diamonds

Jake and Jas's ring: 3.5 carat moval.
- Centre stone
- 3.5 carat moval diamond
- Setting
- Six tulip setting with a hidden halo, cathedral into a split shank
- Metal and band
- 14K yellow gold, 2.5 mm half round
- Details
- Diamonds on both sides of the bridge
The most sparkle of the three. The hidden halo sits under the stone and the bridge diamonds show from the side. More on the halo in what a hidden halo is. See Jake and Jas's ring.
Ring 3: 3.57 carats in two tone

David's ring: white gold petals on a yellow gold band.
- Centre stone
- 3.57 carat moval diamond
- Setting
- Six tulip petals, split shank flowing into the petals
- Metal and band
- 14K white gold and 14K yellow gold, 2.3 mm half round euroshank
The white gold head keeps the prongs quiet against the diamond and the yellow band keeps the ring warm. See David's ring.
What to get right on a moval tulip
- Prong placement. Where the six prongs sit decides whether the moval reads long or soft. We go through it in moval prong placement.
- Ratio. Movals usually run about 1.7 to 2.0. Lower reads like a slim oval, higher like a soft marquise. See what a moval is.
- Split shank or not. All three of these have one. If you want it hidden from the top, see a split shank you cannot see from the top.
A fourth moval tulip, set east west in platinum with a north star engraved under the bridge, is in a moval cut ring with tulip petals.
How to get a moval tulip like these
Pick the one closest to what you want and tell us the size. Every tulip variation we make is on our tulip basket page, and the tulip rings show settings to start from.
For a sense of budget, half of our Canadian ring orders were quoted between $5,100 and $7,000 CAD, centre stone included. The full breakdown is on our pricing page.

Usually six claw prongs, which become six petals under the stone. All three rings on this page use six.
What ratio is a moval diamond?
Usually about 1.7 to 2.0 length to width. Lower looks like a slim oval, higher looks like a marquise with soft tips.
Can a moval tulip have a hidden halo?

Can the head be white gold on a yellow gold ring?
Yes. The 3.57 carat ring here has white gold petals on a yellow gold band.
Will a wedding band sit flush with a moval tulip?
It can if we design for it. We explain how in our guide to wedding bands with tulip baskets.
