Can You Resize an Engraved Ring? It Depends Where

In this guide

Short answer: It depends on where the engraving is. A band engraved all the way round usually cannot be resized, because cutting and stretching breaks the pattern, so it may need to be remade. Engraving kept to the bridge or the top of the band leaves the bottom of the shank plain, which is where a resize happens. Our resizing is $200 CAD shipped.

Rings get resized at the bottom of the band, the part that sits against your palm. So what matters is whether there is engraving there.

Which engraved rings usually cannot be resized?

Bands engraved all the way round, and bands engraved on three sides down to the bottom. Cutting the band and adding or removing metal leaves a gap or overlap in the pattern that cannot be carved back without showing. Eternity bands have the same problem with their stones. Those rings usually need to be remade at the new size.

Which engraved rings leave room for a resize?

Rings whose engraving stops short of the bottom: engraving on the bridge, the gallery rail or the prongs, top side band engraving, or engraving that runs 75 to 80% down the band. The plain section underneath is where a jeweller works. We look at each ring when it comes in before saying yes.

What about engraving inside the band?

Text inside the band sits on the same strip of metal a resize changes. A small change may leave it intact if it sits away from the bottom; a bigger one can cut through it. If you expect to resize, keep inside text short and centred toward the sides.

How do I avoid needing a resize?

    • Get the size measured properly, and check it again for a cold-weather or warm-weather finger.
    • Our ring size page walks through it, and the fit guide explains what a good fit feels like.
    • If the size is a surprise, sort it out before production starts, since the engraving is cut after casting.

    How much does resizing cost?

    Questions we get about this

Can an engraved ring be resized?

If the engraving stops before the bottom of the band, usually yes. A fully engraved band usually cannot and may need to be remade.

Can you size up an engraved ring?

The same rule applies: it depends on whether the bottom of the band is engraved.

    Does resizing ruin inside engraving?

It can, if the text sits near the bottom of the band. Short text toward the sides is safest.
