Emerald Cut vs Cushion Engagement Ring: Sparkle, Clarity and Price
By Clint Casmiro, Co-Founder, Smiro Studio · Updated October 22, 2026
Short answer: An emerald cut is a step cut: long facets and broad flashes of light rather than sparkle, and inclusions show more, so we suggest VVS2 or better. A cushion has soft rounded corners and larger facets, gives more sparkle, and VS1 is eye clean. On our list the settings cost the same for both shapes, and complete rings with a 2 carat lab grown stone start at $3,100 CAD for either.

Both carry a big stone well, and they look nothing alike once they are set. Here is how we help people choose.
How do they look different?
Emerald cut. A rectangle with cut corners and long step facets. It gives broad flashes of light more than sparkle, and it shows a stone's body colour most strongly, so we look for a clean stone with even corners.
Cushion. Soft rounded corners and larger facets, square or elongated. It can be cut four ways: old mine for big, slow flashes, crushed ice for the most glitter in sunlight, a regular brilliant, or a Portuguese cut with a floral facet pattern. All four in cushion diamonds 101.
Which one needs a cleaner diamond?
The emerald cut. Step cuts have long, open facets, and an inclusion can reflect through the whole stone, so we suggest VVS2 or better. On a cushion, anything VS1 and above is eye clean. That difference can move your budget, see where people overspend on colour and clarity.
Which is better for everyday wear?
Both, with the right setting. An emerald cut's four cut corners are where it can chip, so a bezel that keeps them inside metal protects it. See bezel set emerald cut rings. A cushion has rounded corners, so there are no sharp points to cover.
Which looks bigger?
It depends on the shape of the stone more than the cut. An elongated cushion looks bigger for its carat and slims the finger, and our listed emerald cuts run a ratio of 1.40 to 1.50. Ask for the measurements in millimetres, not just the carat. More in carat vs ratio, and if you are also looking at radiants, elongated cushion vs radiant.

Questions we get about this
Is an emerald cut or a cushion more expensive?
On our list the settings cost the same for both. With a 2 carat lab grown stone, our complete emerald and cushion rings both start at $3,100 CAD in 14K gold.
What clarity should an emerald cut be?
We suggest VVS2 or better, because an inclusion can reflect through the long open facets of a step cut.
Which sparkles more, emerald or cushion?
The cushion. An emerald cut gives broad flashes of light rather than sparkle.
Can I put an emerald cut in a bezel?
Yes. A bezel keeps the four cut corners, where an emerald cut can chip, inside metal.
