Hand Engraving vs Laser Engraving on a Ring

In this guide

Short answer: Hand engraving is cut into the metal by a person with gravers, so every line has depth and catches light differently. Laser engraving is etched by a machine: flat, uniform and exact, which is why we use it for text inside the band. Of our 56 named styles, 48 are carved by hand, 7 inside the band are lasered and 1 is cast.

A product page that says "engraved" often doesn't say how. The method changes how the pattern looks from across a table, how it ages and where on the ring it can go.

How can you tell hand engraving from laser engraving?

Tilt the ring. Hand cuts are V-shaped and polished on their walls, so light runs along them and the pattern flickers as the ring moves. Laser marks sit at one shallow depth and read the same from every angle, a bit like printing. Up close, a hand cut flower has petals of slightly different sizes; a lasered one is identical every time.

What does cast engraving look like next to hand engraving?

Cast engraving is built into the wax or the 3D model, so the pattern comes out of the mould already raised or recessed. It is even and repeatable, and softer at the edges than a fresh graver cut. The clearest comparison we have is the same pattern done both ways:

Left, cut by hand. Right, the cast version of the same design. The hand cuts are sharper and brighter.

We also do a mix: a cast base pattern with a hand engraver adding detail on top. It keeps a long repeat consistent while the finishing cuts stay crisp.

Where does each method belong on an engagement ring?

Method How it is made How it looks Where we use it
Hand Carved with gravers, one cut at a time Depth, bright edges, no two alike Band, bridge, gallery rail, euroshank, bezel edge, prongs
Cast Built into the mould Even, softer edges Long repeats where every section should match
Hand + cast Cast base, hand detail on top Even layout, crisp finishing cuts Full bands with a repeating motif
Laser Etched by a laser Flat and uniform Names, dates, handwriting and symbols inside the band

Inside the band is the one place we laser. Text there has to be exact and very small, and inner band engraving is free on our rings for up to 10 to 12 characters. More in what to engrave inside a ring.

Is hand engraving better than laser engraving?

For the outside of an engagement ring, yes, and it is why 28% of our ring orders added hand engraving (181 of 644 paid between December 2025 and October 2026). Laser is the better tool for tiny lettering. A ring can carry both: hand engraving you see, and lasered words only the wearer reads.

Ace's ring is a good example: floral scroll is cut by hand down both sides of the band, and a more personal engraving sits inside it.

Does the method change the price?

Hand engraving costs more because it is hours of skilled work per ring; laser text inside the band is free up to 10 to 12 characters. We price hand engraving with the rest of your design, and our order numbers on what engraved rings were quoted are in how much hand engraving costs.

    Questions we get about this

Is hand engraving better than laser engraving?

On the outside of a ring, yes: hand cuts have depth and catch light. Laser is better for small, exact text inside the band.

How do I know if my ring is hand engraved?

Tilt it under a light. Hand cuts flash and change as the ring moves, and repeated motifs vary slightly. Laser marks look flat and identical.

    What is cast engraving?

A pattern built into the mould, so it comes out of casting already in the metal. It is even and repeatable, with softer edges than a hand cut.

Can a ring have both hand and laser engraving?

Yes. Many of ours do: hand engraving on the band or bridge, and lasered text or symbols inside.

Do you laser engrave the outside of rings?

No. Outside the band we carve by hand. Laser is only for inside the band.
