Can Any Ring Be Engraved? Where Engraving Goes and How It's Done
By Clint Casmiro, Co-Founder, Smiro Studio · Updated October 22, 2026
Short answer: Almost any ring we make can be engraved somewhere. By hand on the band, the bridge under the head, the gallery rail, the euroshank or the bezel edge, and by laser inside the band for names, dates and short messages. What changes is how much room there is: a thin gallery rail suits fine scroll or leaves, while a band can take full coverage. One thing to plan for: a fully engraved band usually cannot be resized, so get the size right first.
Engraving is added to more than one in four of our ring orders, 28% of 644 between December 2025 and October 2026. Here is where it can go and which method suits each spot.
Where on a ring can engraving go?
| Where | What fits | Method |
|---|---|---|
| The band | A fine border up to full coverage, always visible. 34 styles. | By hand |
| The bridge | Under the head, seen only by the wearer. It does not change how the band stacks. 15 styles. | By hand |
| Inside the band | Dates, initials, handwriting, a short phrase, even a birthstone. 7 styles. | Laser |
| The gallery rail | The thin rail under the head. Not much room, so scroll and fine leaves work best. | By hand |
| The euroshank | The flat part of the band against the finger. | By hand |
| The bezel | A half bezel leaves a smooth edge to carve along; a full bezel basket is its own canvas. | By hand |
All 56 styles are on our hand engraving page.
Hand, cast or laser: what is the difference?
- Hand engraving. Carved straight into the metal by a skilled artisan with gravers. The cuts have depth and catch the light, and no two are alike.
- Cast engraving. The pattern is built into the mould, so it comes out the same every time.
- Hand and cast mix. A cast base pattern with hand carved detail on top.
- Laser engraving. Flat, even lines, exactly the same every time. Best for names and dates inside the band.
How to tell good hand work from bad is in good vs bad hand engraving.
Is there anything that cannot be engraved?
Engraving needs metal to carve, so it goes where the ring has a metal surface. Two things to plan for:
- Resizing. A fully engraved band usually cannot be resized, because cutting and stretching it breaks the pattern. It may need to be remade, so settle the size before you order. More in ring resizing cost.
- Eternity bands. With stones around the outside, engraving moves inside. Our round three quarter eternity band can have inner band engraving.
What styles can I choose?
Most people start with one of three: Floral, Vintage Scroll, or our most loved, the Floral Vintage Mix. We have also carved constellations, birth flowers, a custom bee, a celtic knot, handwriting and a design matched to a tattoo. Ideas in floral vs vintage scroll and birth flower engraving.
Does engraving change the price?
Hand engraving adds bench time, so it adds to the price. We quote it with your design, and the free estimate gives you a price for your exact ring in about a minute.

Can any ring be engraved?
Almost any ring we make can be engraved somewhere: by hand on the band, bridge, gallery rail, euroshank or bezel, and by laser inside the band.
Is your engraving done by hand?
Yes. Our engraving is carved by hand with gravers. Text inside the band is laser engraved for clean, exact lines.
Can an engraved ring be resized?
A fully engraved band usually cannot, because cutting it breaks the pattern. Get the size right before you order.
What can I engrave inside a ring?
Dates, initials, handwriting or a short phrase, laser engraved, and we can set a birthstone there too.
