A Neon Pink Spinel Engagement Ring with a Halo and Engraving

Short answer: This ring is a 2.18 carat oval neon pink spinel surrounded by a full halo of diamonds, in 18K yellow gold on a low dome 4 mm band. Each side has three rows of diamonds in two sets, with delicate floral engraving in the gaps between them. Spinel is a good engagement ring gemstone: it sits at 8 on the Mohs scale, below sapphire at 9 and diamond at 10, and it comes in very bright pinks.

A strong colour like this is the reason to choose spinel. The halo frames the oval in white, which makes the pink look brighter by contrast, and the yellow gold band warms the whole ring.
Why the wide band, the rows and the engraving?
With a 4 mm low dome band there is room for real detail. The diamond rows are split into two sets on each side, and the hand engraving fills the spaces between them so the band does not read as one long strip of pavé. Is spinel a good engagement ring stone?
- Hardness. 8 on the Mohs scale. Harder than tourmaline or amethyst, a little softer than sapphire.
- Colour. Pink and red spinels can be very saturated, like this neon pink.
- Care. A halo protects the edges of the stone. Like any gemstone, take it off for rough work.

Is spinel good for an engagement ring?
