Asymmetrical Engagement Rings: Different on Each Side
By Clint Casmiro, Co-Founder, Smiro Studio · Updated October 22, 2026
Short answer: An asymmetrical engagement ring keeps the centre stone balanced but treats the two sides differently. We have built it three ways: a 2.01 carat oval halo with bridge diamonds and hidden pavé on one side only, a 4 carat radiant halo with diamonds on one side of the bridge and engraving on the other, and a 2.28 carat round tulip with bridge engraving on one side.
Asymmetry works best as a side view detail. From the top all three of these look like classic rings. Turn them and each side tells you something different.
How do you make an oval halo asymmetrical?
Put the extra sparkle on one side only: bridge diamonds and hidden pavé down a single side.

Juan's ring: 2.01 carat oval with an outer halo.
- Centre stone
- 2.01 carat oval diamond
- Setting
- Outer halo, cathedral, bridge diamonds on one side only
- Band
- 14K yellow gold, 2.3 mm euroshank, hidden pavé running 75% down one side
The halo keeps the top full and symmetrical, and the one sided details make it feel personal. See Juan's ring.
Can one side have diamonds and the other engraving?
Yes. On this anniversary ring one side of the bridge has diamonds and the other has custom engraving.

Lee's ring: 4 carat radiant in platinum.
- Centre stone
- 4 carat radiant cut diamond
- Setting
- Outer halo, cathedral
- Band
- Platinum, 3 mm half round, hidden pavé 80% down both sides
- Bridge
- Diamonds on one side, custom engraving on the other
The pavé is the same on both sides, so the asymmetry is only in the bridge. Ideas for an anniversary ring are on anniversary rings. See Lee's ring.
What is the subtlest way to make a ring asymmetrical?
Engrave one side of the bridge and leave the other plain.

Tilak's ring: 2.28 carat round in platinum.
- Centre stone
- 2.28 carat round diamond
- Setting
- Tulip setting, hidden halo, cathedral
- Band
- Platinum, 2 mm half round
- Details
- Bridge engraving on one side
A small hand engraved detail on one side is easy to miss and easy to love. See Tilak's ring.
Where can a ring be asymmetrical?
Anywhere on the side view, from the most visible to the most hidden.
| Ring | What differs side to side | How visible |
|---|---|---|
| Juan's | Bridge diamonds and pavé on one side | Clear from the side |
| Lee's | Diamonds on one side of the bridge, engraving on the other | Up close |
| Tilak's | Bridge engraving on one side | Only up close |

How do you plan the two sides?
Tell us what you want on each side: diamonds, engraving or plain metal. We plan it so the top stays balanced. More ways to make a ring yours are on personalized engagement rings.
Every design starts as a CAD file you mark up, so you see both sides before anything is made: engagement ring CAD design.

What is an asymmetrical engagement ring?
A ring where the two sides are treated differently, for example diamonds on one side of the bridge and engraving on the other, while the centre stone stays balanced.
Does an asymmetrical ring look unbalanced?
Not if the top stays symmetrical. All three rings on this page look classic from above and show the difference from the side.
Can pavé go down only one side of the band?
Yes. The 2.01 carat oval here has hidden pavé running 75% down one side.
Can an anniversary ring be asymmetrical?
Yes. The 4 carat radiant here is an anniversary ring with diamonds on one side of the bridge and engraving on the other.
