Should I Engrave My Engagement Ring? Pros and Cons
By Clint Casmiro, Co-Founder, Smiro Studio · Updated October 22, 2026
Short answer: Engrave it if you want a ring nobody else has and you are sure of the size: 28% of our ring orders add hand engraving. Skip it, or keep it to the bridge, if the budget is tight, the size might change or you want a sleek modern band. Engraving under the stone is the middle path: hidden from the top, personal underneath.
There is no wrong answer. These are the trade-offs we go through on a call.
What are the reasons to engrave?
- It makes the ring one of a kind. Hand cuts are never repeated exactly, so no other ring matches yours.
- It carries a story. A flower, a place or a symbol says more than a plain band.
- It adds detail without a bigger stone. The side view gets interesting without changing the stone.
- It suits the metal most people pick. Yellow gold led our 2026 orders at 76%, and engraving shows best on it.

The same ring two ways. From the top, Ace's marquise looks like a clean solitaire. From the side, both sides of the band are floral scroll.
What are the reasons not to?
- Price. Our listed engraved rings start at $4,600 CAD against $3,100 CAD for rings without it, both with a 2 carat lab grown diamond.
- Resizing. A fully engraved band usually cannot be resized without breaking the pattern.
- Care. Grooves collect soap and lotion and need a soft brush now and then.
- Style. If you want a sleek, minimal band, engraving fights it.
Is there a middle option?
Yes: engrave where it is hidden. Bridge engraving sits under the stone, so the band stays plain, stacks flush with a wedding band and keeps the bottom free for a future resize. Leaf engraved prongs are an even smaller step.

Vinh's ring: a plain band, with the engraving kept to the bridge.
What do most people choose?
Just over one in four: 181 of 644 ring orders paid between December 2025 and October 2026 added hand engraving. Text inside the band is free up to 10 to 12 characters and changes nothing about the look.
Can I add engraving later?
Plan it from the start if you can. The band is designed with room for the engraving and it is cut during production. Answers on where engraving can go are in can any ring be engraved.

Questions we get about this
Should I engrave my engagement ring?
If you want it one of a kind and you are sure of the size, yes. If budget or resizing worries you, keep engraving to the bridge.
Is hand engraving worth it?
If you want the ring to carry a story, yes. It does cost more: our listed engraved rings start at $4,600 CAD against $3,100 CAD without engraving, so weigh it against the stone.
What percentage of engagement rings are engraved?
On our orders, 28%: 181 of 644 ring orders paid December 2025 to October 2026.
Can I keep the band plain and still engrave?
Yes. Put the engraving on the bridge, under the stone, and leave the band smooth.
Can I just engrave inside the band?
Yes. Text inside the band is free up to 10 to 12 characters and does not change the look.
